The Kawasaki KLR 650

The Kawasaki KLR 650 has been around since 1987 and still is the most popular choice for dual sports bike enthusiasts. The US Military uses KLR 650s with modified engines running on diesel fuel and can attest to the reliability and toughness of this model. Whereas, other manufacturers have put more technology in their bikes, Kawasaki chose a more minimalistic approach to this particular segment.

By keeping things simple, maintenance costs are kept low and can be performed by owners themselves. It is good to know that Kawasaki decided to stick with a tried and tested formula for this particular model and applied their technological innovations somewhere else.

The powerful, yet economical, 4-stroke, 4-valve, 651cc single-cylinder engine puts out 37bhp and a maximum torque of 36.9lb/ft at 5500rpm. Fed by a Keihin CVK40 carb, this engine provides great throttle response and bottom end pull to play around dirt trails and sand while having the power to maintain highway speeds. The fuel tank can hold up to 6.1 gallons of gasoline and can do 55 miles per gallon, translating to more fun in between fill-ups.

The front suspension consists of a 41mm telescopic fork while the back features a UNITRAK 5-way preload adjustable single-shock system with step less damper rebound adjustment. Suspension travel at the front is 7.9 inches and 7.3 inches behind. A 280mm “petal” type disc clamped by a 2-piston caliper in the front and a 240mm with a single piston caliper in the rear provides more than enough braking power to control this 430-pound beast.

Out of the box, this heavy dualie holds its own on pavement. The suspension is comfortable and keeps the bike composed; although, it may be a bit too soft for some tastes. A full tank can make the turn-in quite sluggish then improves once you’ve used half of it.

On the trails, the suspension can only take so much given this bike’s immense weight, but simply swapping the stock springs with stiffer ones will improve things dramatically.

Kawasaki KLR 650

Overall, the KLR 650 is still good value for money and has been the industry standard in dual-sports bikes for years. Even with some modifications, this bike still costs less than its European counterparts do. The new styling not only makes the bike look cool, but also works great at highway speeds and does not hinder when going off-road.

The new alternator provides 36 watts of power to accommodate high output headlamps, GPS navigation and other electronic gadgets necessary for long-distance trips. The seats are soft, yet, provide enough support and the ergonomics are comfortable for both on and off the road. Best of all, the KLR 650 is cheap and easy to maintain which is good to know in case you get stuck in the middle of nowhere.
