zxr 400 l (Edited)

I have owned the zxr400l for quite some time now and i belive it to be one of the best 400s around. It has great handling and is very low so it is good for the smaller of people it does lack power though but is what you would expect from a little 400.

Even though it doent have loads of power it can still reach high speeds. It has a limiter which i seem to remember reading somewhere that it restricts it to 135mph. I bought mine second hand and it is not standard so it can reach over 140mph maybe even faster.

I still think it is one of the fastest 400s but the fzr400 seems a more powerfull bike.

For looks i would say it is nice looking it has nice curves and you’ve got to love the kawazaki green. My bike is fully green with a few white stickers which are not as standard but do just give it the edge.

I like the bike mainly for the riding position it feels like a race bike should it can be thrown in to corners very fast and takes them with ease. The brakes are not brilliant though, well the front is ok but the back brake is a bit weak. It has twin disks up front with twin pot tokico calipers. The back caliper is also tokico but it is weak where the bleed nipple is situated.

I have had a couple brake on me and had to replace them. It is best to upgrade the brake and put braided hoses all round. I have just replaced my back brake with another standard brake.

I bought it from a shop on ebay called A.M.S Motorsport which is situated in Wales. This company specialises in zxr 400’s. It only cost me Ј20 for the brake and Ј12 delivery charge which is a bargain.

If you know what you are doing, fitting the new brake isnt too complicated. My bike is also fitted with a carbon micron exhaust which is not road leagal but looks and sounds like a real racer.

I only paid Ј600 for the bike which i belive to be a bargain. It is, as with all bikes, best to shop around a bit to get the best prices. These bikes can be worth well over Ј1000.

My bike is on a k plate but has only done about 20000 miles so dont be worried about buying a fairly old bike, you can tell if they have been looked after. The bike seems very reliable the only problem i have had is the back brake which may have been because of wear. I do buy most of my parts second hand as they are expensive new but can be hard to find for the right price.

It is cheap to tax as it only has two wheels but Insurance can be pricey depending on your points and where you keep the bike. All bikes are rather nickable and should really be fitted with an alarm/immobiliser. I havent had this problem as I have a good bike lock and keep it in an alarmed garage when not in use. If you’re worried you can buy all the usual security features. A good bike lock and a garage is all you really need.

Never just fit the lock around the wheel to stop it moving. Lock it to something as they are light and can be just thrown in the back of a van.

Overall a very nice bike to ride on A roads but no good for motorway miles the fuel consumption as with all bikes is good when not pushed hard .The downside is as with a lot of bikes is that there is no fuel guage which is always a worry, if your like me you wont like relying on the reserve. The zxr 400 is a great starter bike so dont let the few little bad points put you off as this bike has been one of the most fun to ride out of the many i have had even compared to some 600s i have owned.
