Kawasaki’s ZX6R – a perfect 600 /

Road test by Adrian photos by Steve Gregory Bradley

KAWASAKI seems to come up with a bike to all the other 600’s on today’s The new ZX-6R in 636 guise not only sharp, but is extremely fast and almost everything in its stride. It is a bike for the ‘real world’ and do just about anything the likes of the GSXR 600 and R6 can do without ‘living on the edge’ feeling. It be out-scratched on the track, but as a bike for all of riding and roads it’s hard to beat.

I got the distinct when riding the new 636 of the refinement and of the CBR 600 but with crisper handling and a sharper bike all round. The new has kept that typical aggressive look about it the huge ram-air intake under its two raked headlights. The is unchanged for 2002 but the minor to the enormous 46mm forks the front end a smooth action and a feedback on most roads. together with the Dunlop tyres, now up to 120/65 ZR17 and a massive 180/55 ZR17 – the same as most 750’s and larger bikes – makes new 636 cope superbly with the road can throw at it.

The engine has an extra 2mm bored out in cylinder to give it the extra few this simple modification has such a difference to the mid-range delivery and has put the bhp up to a very respectable This spread of extra and torque actually makes the feel much bigger it really is, so much so that at I really thought I was riding a 750 due to the of gear changes needed.

The new is smooth and has a progressive power from as little as 3000rpm. builds up quite significantly at and gives you that typical associated with larger from around 9,000rpm all the way up to the 14,500rpm red line. The one thing you really must do is keep an eye on speedo, this bike is so in it power delivery and its general on the road that you do find travelling at much higher than you really think.

As the delivery is smooth, so to is the fairing and the feel of this bike. The position is comfortable and roomy, and those slightly higher set it gives this bike touring capability with the to stop being only to its fuel range.

I’m sure the lack of wind blast the higher screen and well fairing added to the impression of speeds, all you need do is slip down behind the screen and it is surprising how little wind you get. I was stunned at the lack of on my visor, I’m sure this is to do the fairing aerodynamics and screen in any case it was just a pleasure to a sports bike that did have an effective standard

The ZX6R is a great bike for the it does everything you want ease and can cover great without the need for those stops to rest your arms and neck you get on other radical supersports. Riding bike on a daily basis is not a it is great fun and it can keep up (and embarrass) the ‘big boys’.

The 636 has the and torque to swiftly overtake without the need to change just twist the throttle and let the take off. It is certainly a from the rev hungry 600’s on the and will satisfy many who want both performance and in a smaller capacity bike.

our time with the 636 we had the opportunity to it on a track day at Cadwell Park, to see how it really performed, and to get some of just how well it would up as a track day tool! After a or so of running in and out of London and blitzing the A B of the Oxfordshire countryside it was time to it out on the track.

Cadwell Park is a beautiful 2 hilly circuit in Lincolnshire and has long sweeping corners, tight downhill sections a straight and of course the ‘Mountain’ its virtually impossible to hold the end down as you crest over the Some people describe it is a Nurburgring’, both the scenery and the of the track give you that feeling of the real thing.

Now on with this bike is story. Gone are the somewhat manners you get from riding the on the ordinary roads, suddenly the ZX6 into some howling as the motor spins up beyond in 4th and you see 130mph looming on the speedo. Ok so only the 1st lap out, admittedly on tyres, but having the power and line speed to seriously most bigger bikes a time was a bit of a laugh at times!

out of the crate handling is a little biased and we found this out as the day With a few small tweaks to the pre-load and rebound on both the and rear we managed to get most of the irritations dialled out and progressively the bike a harder set up for the track.

On larger capacity bikes you to be very careful with the to avoid slides, unwanted and the possible visit by Mr Highside, so so that it can be intimidating for a lot of riders. the throttle as hard as you want on the and this fear needn’t you, less is more some bikes and this is a example of one. Keep engine spinning, that’s the way to get the thrills from the ZX-6R.

power delivery right up to where the power tails but change up a gear and just to that hair-raising roar the air-induction. Keep it howling and you see 160mph plus from amazing engine. The ZX6 has an excellent of light and quick steering for the corners and last minute changes, while staying and flap-free at all speeds.

It really matter what the roads are and even when pushed to the on the track, you always have faith and satisfaction in its performance.

The new 636 has calipers up front. When I saw this I thought it was a bit extreme on a six but after riding it for a while the was that they have to be to the performance of this bike. work incredibly well you down from ridiculous at the last moment. The only I had about the new ZX6 was the front forks.

There was always a little under heavy braking, and a speed through a certain long corner. With a bit time and a little more around with the suspension I felt that this was that could be dialled out

the course of the day we had 3 different riders the ZX6 a really hard time. It have been nice to find something to criticise the for, but apart from the patter there was nothing bike couldn’t do that the could. Yes it is pushed hard by the of the more demanding to ride 600’s and R6’s on the track, but by experienced riders.

Life on bike is calmer and much composed than it is on the other 2, and the is just as fast. It is likely this bike would be the for the majority of riders as it’s so to ride fast, it handles and really well, it’s and practical and it’s even got loops headlight adjusters. The ZX6 gets the really useful grab rail award, but it definitely do with a fuel instead of a sudden warning you need to turn the fuel tap to halfway around a long on the track. (just a little Mr Kawasaki!) Indeed the new ZX6R is a bike for all types of riding, It may not be the boy’ on the block but as a real bike it’s probably the you can get in it’s class.
