Intro

Austrian motorcycle company KTM Sport motorcycle AG placed the KTM 50 Adventure at the lowest level of the Adventure series of dual-purpose bikes, and made it available in two models for the 2005 model year. They consist of the 50 Adventure Mini and the slightly spruced-up 50 Adventure Senior. The manufacturer’s suggested retail prices of the 2005 KTM 50 Adventure are $1,598 for the Mini and $2,148 for the Senior.

The 2005 KTM 50 Adventure bears the number 50 as the rounded-up figure for the displacement of its two-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder engine; it displaces at 49 cubic centimeters. Manufactured with a reed valve configuration, the engine is fueled by a Dell’Orto carburetor (12 millimeters on the Mini, 14 millimeters on the Senior). The bore and stroke of the engine is 39.5 x 40 mm (1.56 x 1.58 inches), and it is linked with an electric starter for convenient ignition.

An automatic transmission and chain drive completes the bike’s powertrain. Each 2005 KTM 50 Adventure has a 0.53-gallon (2-liter) gas tank.

Each 2005 KTM 50 Adventure uses an all-wheel drum brake system, which largely consists of 3.5-inch (90-mm) drums on each wheel. (The Senior, though, has a larger, 6.3-inch / 160–mm front drum brake.) The suspension is composed of a 1.3-inch (33-mm) Marzocchi telescopic fork and twin-sided swing arm with rear shock for a smooth and controlled driving experience. The wheels and tires on the Mini are 10-inch ones; the Senior rides on front 12-inch and rear 10-inch wheels and tires.

Sporting an orange color scheme with a black vinyl seat, the 2005 KTM 50 Adventure uses a steel frame for sturdiness, with the traditional front and rear fenders and a kick stand for parking. The color finish also sports a decal kit to denote the type and model of bike.

At the front of the 2005 KTM 950 Adventure is a digital dashboard with a clock, tachometer, trip odometer, trip computer, speedometer, temperature warning gauge and fuel level warning light. Also up front are a halogen headlight and pair of rearview mirrors for enhanced visibility, and a mid-height windshield for wind deflection. Storage space consists of a rear rack, and under-seat and lockable compartments.

With a dry weight of 84.7 lbs. (38.4 kilograms), the Senior model of the 2005 KTM 50 Adventure is slightly heavier than the Mini, which has a dry weight of 83.4 lbs. (37.8 kg). Also, while the Mini has a wheelbase of 35.6 inches (905 mm), that of the Senior is measured at 40.6 inches (1,030 mm); and the ground clearance and seat height are 7.5 inches (190 mm) and 20.9 inches (530 mm) for the former and 10 inches (255 mm) and 25.6 inches (650 mm) for the latter. Regardless of model, though, the 2005 KTM 50 Adventure has a seat height of 35.3 inches (895 mm).

The 2005 KTM 50 Adventure is ideally designed for novice riders who want an off-road bike with the bare essentials and ease of operation. It might be far from the best bike to handle both paved and unpaved roads, particularly within the Adventure family. In fact, the 50 Adventure falls short in the features department; it lacks the lights, mirrors and dashboard common on even the most basic of motorcycles.

However, being the most advanced bike has never been its purpose anyway.
