Beyond The Horizon

Testing the KTM 500EXC

I think many of you know that I am currently and racing a 2012 KTM 500xc-w. I the report on that is coming I am testing some new parts and set up on it, so be patient.

In the meanwhile, the opportunity up to ride the EXC, the street version of the same bike, so I at it and am ready to share that

As I had already tested both the 500 and 450 I wondered if I would find new to talk about here. As it out, I have lots of new and insight. My problem is more one of to get my thoughts all in order so I can pass on.

Let’s start with a recap. The all new 2012 500 has the latest cam motor, fuel injection, PDS suspension, 48mm WP open forks and an all new frame. The wheel and are standard KTM components, but beyond it is mostly an all-new platform.

A look at the spec sheet that the EXC and XC-W are practically the bikes. The dual sport EXC comes with all the required to make it street legal; switch gear, mirrors and emissions equipment. The fuel map is also slightly different.

means that it is leaner at a of specific rpm ranges.

So does mean that the EXC is a detuned of the XC-W? Well yes and no, technically it is a leaner and that should to less power. Yet in real riding, I cannot tell any difference between the two bikes. them back to back, feel like the exact motorcycle.

KTM has really done homework on this one.

If we consider the role of the EXC as ranging dual sport to serious bike, it is almost suited to the better than the XC-W. The settings are the same on both The great thing about the EXC is it feels completely at home on the The suspension gives a super ride. In the dirt, it feels as at home for anything short of race pace.

It suits my better than the 350EXC I previously tested.

I am always about the fact that I a dual sport bike feel at home on the street. I want it to feel like a track refuge. The 500 hits the amazingly well.

I was struck by the that there is not driveline It shifts smooth. The clutch is equally smooth. There is of the chain slap that can be so on short … motors.

It is just a nice enjoyable

The 500 motor makes street something to enjoy rather dread. In the stock configuration, it very well. The throttle is particularly good.

Factor in the light clutch and throttle and it makes most other feel brutish by comparison.

The runs like a really tuned 450. That is to that because of the emissions and it does not really pump out big bore power. Equally, it has no up” feel either. It just very nice.

It also has the personality of a 450, nice and

The wide range of power the motor churns out does what I find as one of the few shortcomings of the The gear ratios of the six-speed are much shorter than With 14/48 gearing, the 500 sixth gear quickly on the

When I tested the 350EXC, was not so obvious because the close helped keep the little right in the sweet spot of the rev The bigger 500 could easily much wider gearing.

get the rest of the nit picking out of the way now too. I like to see a better headlight. The KTM could use some updating for use.

It has many functions but is of use any of them while riding. For a sport bike, I would like to see a heat shield for the header.

Have I ever that KTM seats are uncomfortable? I my own Seat Concepts set up that I to all the orange bikes, love it. is about it for complaints.

I did not break on the bike. The lights, turn and license plate mount all up fine to my abuse.

So may as well come out and say it. I love bike. Riding down the I was thinking, “if I could only own one this is what I would it to be like”. It makes you want to go out and It feels like a package, not a of components.

The RD work that KTM in the states really pays

In showroom stock condition it just fine and is super Take off the lights and it is every bit as off worthy as the XC-W. Do some work and add an exhaust and it could be a race bike.

If you want to go a direction, add a tank and some of cool fairing and it could be the lightweight, rally replica, ADV Are you listening KTM?

I almost a little embarrassed gushing this bike. But, it is damn good. KTM has raised the bar in a way is going to have everyone on their heels playing up for a while.

Dual purpose has always to compromise. A bike is either suited to the street or dirt, it possibly be equal at both. here it is in living color.
