2014 KTM 250xc-w Review

KTM 250xc-w Race Test

KTM 250xc-w

As I think about it, we never had a real test of a 250 two here at Enduro360. For the last few all the manufactures have focused exclusively on the larger 300 models. It is good reason too, the are easy loving.

But at the same we have overlooked some of the points of the smaller 250’s.

KTM rolled out the collection of 2014 xcw models for us to ride, I was anxious to time on each. Presented a whole fleet of bikes to is a bit overwhelming. There will be enough riding time to get to all of them intimately, but it is also telling to ride each to back.

With the new model on Saturday and the National enduro to on Sunday, part of the plan is to a bike for the race. I knew I would steer clear of the 300 and 350 models, we have been both all season, time for different. The 200xc-w and all new 250xcf-w had me intrigued. While each has its points, the 250f motor me a little flat and the 200 was a bit too soft in the for my weight.

The little thumper will be on my list to give some testing time.

Of all the models, the 250 two seemed to fit me just right. against my favorites, the 300 and 350. So was my clear choice for race

The season is a year of refinement for of the KTM enduro line. It might be to label it a year of bold new but that would not be fair. are enough significant changes to that the orange group is about improvements.

KTM makes “little” changes each than most other do over an entire model

Race Day

In my testing of all the models on a short loop, to my surprise, the 250 2t seemed the natural feeling to me. It felt lighter than the 300. The was slightly easier to manage

Model comparisons are almost Goldilocks testing beds, were not enough, others too and the 250 seemed just right the 350 I must add).

For race we set the sag, but left the suspension in the stock positions. For my weight, I have to set the race sag around with the 6.9 spring. It is not ideal, but it works okay.

The 7.2 rear would be better for my 205lbs.

I opened the power valve one full turn. Historically I not used this adjustment but in Romania my 300 I had was way off, so I started to with it some. For those not the PV screw can be turned in or out, to add or preload from the spring controls the PV actuation.

Adding makes the PV open later as is more spring tension to before the rod can move and of course the effect comes by turning the out and reducing preload.

For many riding conditions, I found that taking off the spring, getting the PV to open improves the overall power It becomes mellow on the bottom, in the midrange transition, then quicker on top. It may sound counter intuitive, but for me it seems to

The effect is even more on the 300.

Race day at the Rattlesnake Enduro proved to be a test of all the I am not very good at; trees, roots and slick rocks. the less, I could find little to fault on the 250xc-w. The always felt light.

I had a bit of confidence in the front end. I really hit the ground, which me I probably should have a little harder.

The power was very good. I could long sections without shifting. The motor would be smooth on the bottom through the sections. I would use just a clutch to keep the revs up.

was no unwanted wheel spin. I needed, I could accelerate but smoothly. Typically the next would arrive before a was required.

The shock was well suited to the terrain. The fork was good, but a bit harsh. I probably should tried some changes to the clickers. The bike only had a of hours total, we find the get much better with break in time. I think the day have been ideally to the newer 4CS fork.

Talking Nick Fahringer between he said he figured the stock fork might have a better choice for the day than his fork.

The rest of the bike good. We were just a rich on the jetting, but I did not mess it either. The new seat is a bit softer and is good. Oddly, I consistently heat coming up through the something that I usually associate with 4-stokes.

stock tubes with of air to avoid flats, I  missed the soft feel of mousses.

As for year’s specific changes, I can say the motors feel great. this 250 and the 2014 Husaberg TE300 that I at Romaniacs had excellent feel. The can be ultra smooth when you it, but hits nice and hard the throttle is dialed up.

The control is great, throttle is very accurate. Yes, the awaited new gas cap does work too.

Overall I have to say 2014 is a year of nice, if subtle, improvements to the KTM, (and Husqvarna) enduro My race result for the Rattlesnake was nothing to brag about, but the Husaberg TE250 and 300 models the podium at this event. Not bad for a that is about to be mothballed.
