950 Super Enduro R. KTM: Trailblazing KTM

Founded in 1934 as a metalworking shop, KTM only began producing motorcycles in 1953. A wise shift it turned out to be as today, they are recognized as the Range Rover of off- road motorcycles. Since venturing into the world of two-wheeled machines, they have been credited with several firsts. They- were the first motorcycle manufacturer to produce a liquid-cooled four-stroke motorcycle engine for an off-road bike.

This breakthrough, now emblazoned on the clutch cover of some of their bikes as LC4, is a design that has been replicated by countless other manufacturers. Another breakthrough introduced by KTM is the use of disc brakes, both front and rear, on an off-road motorcycle. Let’s not forget the link less rear suspension they pioneered which brought about a significant reduction in the unsprung weight of their bikes.

And then there’s the hydraulic clutch mechanism that they used in all their models of motorcycles. The list goes on in KTM’s technological breakthroughs, innovations and contributions to the off- road motorcycle world. It would come as no surprise then, that they would establish themselves as a benchmark in off-road motorcycles.

In fact, theirs is one of the most successful names in one of the most grueling off-road endurance races in the world, the Dakar Rally. Until the last one in 2007, they have claimed the top podium finish 7 years in a row.

Comes The 950 Super Enduro R. Ktm

Continues to push the bar with yet another super motorcycle, the 950 Super Enduro R. Introduced in third quarter 2005/2006, the world of enduro motorcycles has never been the same with the entry of this bike loaded with massive power coupled with relatively easy, lightweight handling. With its center of gravity significantly lower than that of the 640 Adventure, it is perfect for races like the Erzbergrodeo held annually in Austria.

This race is the toughest enduro race in the world, but the 950 goes through its paces with ease. This liquid-cooled 8-valve motorcycle has the necessary long travel and the medium- hard suspension of motocross, but is fitted with features such as a headlight and a (relatively) quiet muffler, making it street legal. But that’s not to say that this bike is ideal for city riding. It isn’t.

Especially not when you have to deal with congested roads and stop-and-go traffic. If at all, its advantage would be the ability to stick close to the sidewalk as it has enough clearance. Or even better, it can climb onto and get off sidewalks in a cinch.

But once you’re stuck at a standstill be prepared to have your nuts and your back fried. A motorcycle with this much power naturally can get really hot. So hot, in fact, that if you’re not careful you could touch the muffler and instantly leave your skin burning on it.

Beware! But if you have the moolah to buy a 950, you will probably have the moolah to buy those neat titanium slip-ons for the mufflers. These will work wonders for taking away your worries of muffler burns.

I’ve Got The Power.

The 950 Super Enduro R is the last of the carbureted 1000cc motorcycles of KTM. Everything that followed thereafter is fuel injected. The logic behind this is very simple – break down out in the middle of nowhere and you’ll be able to fix it yourself. With a fuel-injected bike you would need a computer to do it.

It is a difference however, that does little to lessen the power of the 950. Take the torque for example, if you’re not careful this bike is capable of making a wheelie through every gear. Yes, every gear from 1st to 6th.

And you know that whipping phenomenon you see in MotoGP races, when, coming out of a turn, the bikes seem to slip and slide wildly from side to side? Well, with the 950, again, if you’re not careful with the throttle, you might find the rear whipping so hard the front may not be able to keep up. unless you’re a Pedrosa or a Rossi and you know exactly how to handle such situations. Another illustration of how much power the 950 packs is its ability to clock 200kph in. just 14 seconds.

Pretty scary if you ask me.

Undoubtedly, great power in a motorcycle requires great handling skills. A bike like the KTM 950 Super Enduro R is the perfect example of a motorcycle that, if it were to fall into the wrong hands, could do much damage. But if a man of sound mind, with just the right strength and of sufficient riding skills, were to straddle this machine and take it for a spin, the bright orange streaks it would create would be a sight to behold, If you think you fit the bill, by all means, get in touch with Access Plus and find yourself a KTM 950 Super Enduro R.

An enduro bike has a headlight and a brake light/tail light for on-road and after-dark use.

It is fitted with protective hardware like hand guards (ideal for protection against things like branches);

A skid plate (for protection against rocks, logs, etc.) protects the bottom of the motorcycle.

The disc brakes have rotator protectors to help keep the discs clean.

It has frame guards.

It uses an exhaust system that is street legal (i.e. it meets regulations for noise and spark arresting).

It uses wide gear ratios.

So that it can fit between obstacles like trees and branches, it has narrower handlebars.

Front and rear suspension has ample travel and can be set for preload.

The suspension also has rebound dampening for rider customization to attain the best performance of the suspension according to his physiology, riding style as well as the particular terrain to be ridden.

And finally, an enduro bike usually has a roll chart holder or enduro computer.
