Adventure Bike Review: Diamond on the KTM 990 Dakar Edition

Diamond went from a motorcycle touring customer in a couple of years ago (where he the BMW F800GS) to the guy that came and almost immediately bought the KTM 990 Dakar Edition. You can see a previous post here about how bike now turns 15% more than it did originally, and below are his about the bike and necessary overall. Really though, is commentary about a bike, or the industry as a whole?

I own a 2011 KTM 990 Adventure Dakar I love it. However, I’ve why the Austrians never made simple design improvements were discovered by the aftermarket community years ago. a normal adventure rider not a professional tester, so how is it that it took a 3000 mile up from Los Angeles to the 9th annual KTM Rally in Bend, Oregon to some of these flaws for

Let me first start with I consider to be the most clever you can make for the 950/990:

frame handle to help raise the onto the center stand

bracket to relocate the side off the gearbox onto the frame

larger footprint for the side

racetrack worthy clutch cylinder for improved feel

to relocate the right side off the fluid reservoir onto the

KTM Foot Pegfolding mirrors

foot pegs

12vlt. power supply in the

adjustable hand levers

rear tire

rear arm sliders

12vlt. battery breakout cable maintenance

hand grip warmers

radiator guard

heavy bash plate

rear reservoir guard

folding brake pedal

I’m fairly certain if one of the major Teutonic car makers Porsche or Mercedes found out a design flaw they certainly fix it in the next model or recall the vehicle. So what

KTM 990 Mirror Bracket: I believe are several factors at work It could be that the factory why give stuff away the bike when they can extra money selling a la carte? Or maybe they the bike to be fully tested at a point which is good for the average rider? Is it that see the importance in nurturing the aftermarket because independent suppliers spread brand awareness.

Perhaps they were too with the future 1190 to address any of the problems on the old 950/990? Or they feel that the is a bit of a cultish type bike that KTM customers just like to customize?

KTM Kickstand In my opinion, it’s probably a bit of all of the above. I wanted to talk it with corporate at the Rider but to my chagrin there was no representation Austria. Considering their pedigree I’m surprised don’t fit some of these standard.

My 990 model cost almost as as the BMW, but bone stock relatively pedantic by comparison.

get me wrong folks. I’m not this article to be a hater. a big KTM fan identify myself as a true through through. I just like there are a lot of potential who would prefer to pay a little for their new bike to be totally out when it leaves the showroom.

face it, with several of good Adventure motorcycles now I think it would be wise for KTM to go for it make a true uber as a way to separate themselves from the brands.
