The KTM ‘Beast’ out in the wild

the ‘Beast’ into the Middle II

As agreed earlier with the over at KTM Middle east Al I received confirmation that the new KTM Superduke R which had been at the Dubai Autodrome a week would be available for the weekend. I like to take it for a full test…Errr, is the pope religious?

So, filling in the usual formality and collecting the keys, I returned on the Thursday evening to get ready for an start on the Friday morning. was a small posse of riders at the usual meeting point on Road to join us on the morning The KTM was in good, mixed company for the with a Kawasaki ZX10, Blackbird, a BMW 1000RR and a Triumph Triple.

The Triumph I had ridden and was direct competition for the KTM and one which had a strong reputation for being a all-rounder.

Always happy to don the for a worthy cause.

Pulling from the service station we head over to the usual roads via Kalba and back Hatta for breakfast and then a route back again. for those who know that will also know there is a new section of road is ideal for such road It’s a very open, road with new asphalt and is inviting, an ideal road for both the high speed and the performance of the bike…With the huge of torque this engine I wonder whether I will need to use the gearbox or just it in 6th gear!

Good company for the KTM

As we pulled of the main Hatta Road and down the ‘rabbit hole’ a whole new world was about to up before us. Now the fun begins I thought as our way through a few kilometers of two lane which cut a wavy path Kalba and the hugely popular roads. As the speed increased, the got bigger.

The carrot dangling in of me was kilometer after kilometer of twisting black tarmac ‘fun’ written all over it. I had left the bike in ‘Street’ as I really wanted to see and feel the after riding in ‘sport’ up at the track the week previous. the ride was certainly different, the ABS braking system) and TC traction was on and this was easily confirmed giving the ride by wire an overzealous twist.

As the front left the ground, it is brought back down to earth. No no sudden drop, just a controlled power change the on-board electronics. This you to keep the throttle pinned and the to continue in its quest to wrench arms from their I tried this in the first gears with the same

I also tried it whilst small humps in the road and the end stays pretty much it needs to be to keep you in control.

At one in the middle of the mountain, the road had washed away by the winter falls which had obviously quite heavy. Faced a small detour on a gravel of road around where the used to be, I tried the anti-lock system on the rear. I dipped the and hit the rear brake, a small and the bike pulled to a halt any slides or fuss…This beast was very tame when

I tried it again at a slightly speed, same result….Impressive

End of the road boys

Leaving the smaller roads we were now ‘big boys’ territory and the mountain roads. The speeds again as did the bend frequency. after right, long sweepers, slow tight both uphill and downhill now testing the agility of the ‘Beast’…Everything in its tipping it into the bends, a brake, changing direction, acceleration, hard braking, had her out of shape. This is a very inspiring bike.

The suspension was very plush over the speed retarding painted in bright yellow the road. Where some would start to skip on the as you cranked it over through corners and across these the KTM just soaked them up and got on the business of keeping things in and allowing you, the rider, to about the next direction

Soon after a short we headed out to the new section of road earlier. This was notoriously and with long high sweeping bends which now really test the high handling of the bike in ‘street’ Rider input at higher like these is important. more weight over the of the bike helped keep her as did smooth direction changes and shifting from side to

With huge amounts of available, the gearbox wasn’t required, applying the throttle was than enough. That the gearbox was positive and slick and had a spread, especially once you out of first and second and hooking up the gears.

Long fast sections of road, the perfect for this beast

As we all finally into Hatta Fort for the usual breakfast feast, the was of which route to take as the first half had been so fun. OK, so we do it all again reverse Fuelled up again we headed this time though, would be a swap over. I ride the Triumph for a section and would ride the KTM. As before, the Triumph currently the ‘ace’ in this class of

Some will argue fact in favour of the Aprilia V4R but whichever, and it is all personal preference; the KTM is now a big claim on the class. We covered the hunting ground as we had covered an or so ago, apart from the getting up a little, nothing had

Ripping up the tarmac between us we pulled in before the mountain again, and, as much as it him to say it, Paul was very impressed by the and power of the KTM and by the stopping power. it convince him to swap elegancies, I it…..For now!

Wherever the KTM was it drew close inspection

back over again, we back into Dubai via the roads. We would have 405km by the time we got back for coffee and ginger biscuits! that day I would try some rides, stop start Trips to the shops etc. that I took a trip to the Dubai Autodrome where a track day was being held.

A chance to catch up and talk with other likeminded Once again, the KTM was a crowd and plenty of complimentary comments her way. One guy who will remain is already planning on calling the for a test ride and another, of a new ‘track tool’ after my report on how it went, he is seriously it as he looks to replace his current, track bike….

My final on the Saturday were spent local again, calling at the Café on Beach Road for before going on a short run at the KTM shop to return the bike. the stop start local was a pleasure, no wrist ache being hunched over the no leg ach from an extreme sports position. Yeah, I may be getting old and no want to be head down up but, with this you don’t need to be.

It has all the sporting wrapped in a comfortable shell…What could you want.

Great engine, suspension. The list on!

I had really enjoyed exploring the of the bike, I didn’t find but I did have a lot of fun trying. The ‘beast’ as it has nicknamed is a powerful machine bags of torque but, it is all usable when ridden the traction control and various aids engaged. Does take away from the fun or the ride?

Nope, not at all, what it do is give you the confidence to push a harder than you normally liberties that you wouldn’t take are more doable this machine and, if, you’re feeling brave or or have the riding skills of a rider, then switch it all off and let the show you its teeth. For me, I like to be before I am bitten, I’m happy to around with the electronic helping keep the beast at that way I would hopefully being bitten….

Finally, again, I would like to Mark Chuck Montecillo at KTM East Al Shafar for arranging for the test, much appreciated….
