First Impression: 2005 KTM 125 SX and 250 SX

As new season approaches full the TWMX testing staff’s day of riding was spent with the KTM two-… lineup. In a world now seems dominated by thumpers, spending a full afternoon around Perris Raceway here to say that two-strokes … just yet!

Already heralded as one of the few remaining two-cycles in its class, the KTM125 SX up to the plate in 2005 more than ever to challenge its rivals. For starters, handling has much improved thanks to an frame and suspension package, the 250SX also enjoys.

What’s different from the frames? As you may or may not remember, KTMs in the have featured round, chromoly frames. This the fame is still chromoly but the big difference lies in both the gussets and welds found the frame and the all-new, oval-shaped

The lateral, tubular design was to help out in front end stability entering and exiting rutted and all in all keeps the bikes more in the rough stuff.

The WP is also new on both bikes. The has been redesigned altogether, and the SX now features balanced inner and fork tubes that keep the legs flexing for a better overall handling Chrome-plated pistons were added for less friction, and the have much better resistance than in years

As for the shock, a modified piston rod and new body work together to improved damping characteristics and resistance. KTM’s goal the setup was to offer riders traction on acceleration bumps and an feel coming into braking bumps.

Another cool feature of the models is that both come stock with an aluminum triple clamp. was once a popular aftermarket is now standard equipment, and 2005 KTM have the luxury of choosing either an 18mm offset or a offset, depending on whether want tighter steering or better stability at speeds.

If you think that because there were chassis changes made to the SX that the Austrian engineers on the powerplants, you’re … Bigger crankshaft diameters, piston rings, a new cylinder and carburetor settings all add up to make the 250SX faster than The 125 didn’t get quite as many to its motor, but if you know anything the little orange rocket, you already know that it need it!

Plenty of minor changes also abound in the SX collection, the most important the addition of a stock front brace. Riders will no complain of the stock front slapping against the wheel hard hits—the ’05 is as as a rock! New shrouds are also on the 2005, as are vibration reducing, compound grips mounted to 1 1/8 aluminum handlebars.

Well, of the technical update crap, get to it… On the track, both showed tremendous improvement last year’s models. handling was the name of the game year, and the new frame is definitely a change. Both the 125 and 250 entered and corners and rough, whooped-out like they never before.

Our test guru Rich summed it up best by saying, the past, the KTMs have so fast, motor-wise, that the couldn’t keep up with This year, with the stiffness and rigidity, I can really advantage of the bike’s strong

It’s no secret KTMs of yore were by side-to-side movement in whoops and extremely rough sections of the been a thorn in their for years. The stiffer frame of the has finally all but eeliminated this on both bikes, most the 250. The new suspension also out in the handling department, and our test raved about the updated which resisted bottoming yet still plenty plush in the

Switching to the motor, as usual KTMs are firebreathers. Though a bit off the bottom, once the power on the KTM125SX you better be holding on Mid-range and top-end power is indeed.

After spinning laps on the YZ125 last week we there would be no competition for the tiddler this year, but the KTM has us ourselves. As for the 250, it too was a little off the bottom with stock but once the power hits plenty of it on tap. Mid and top-end was as smooth and predictable as it was fast and

Both two-… KTMs are the of several changes and updates for making them the best bikes to ever roll off the line in Austria. Considering the that we’re now only in the of July and barely into the shootout wars are already up to be some of the best ever. your eyes peeled for the version of TWMX . where have full tests of the KTM125 and 250SX models.
