First Ride: 2012 KTM 450 SX-F Edition

As promised, KTM will delivering its new fuel-injected 450 SX-F Edition, also known as the Replica, next month, but KTM us an early taste of the bike in a one-day riding session at Elsinore Raceway.

The 2012 KTM 450 SX-F Edition includes factory Red Bull SX team graphics.

The which will be dressed up in the clothes as Ryan Dungey’s racer, complete with the number 5 on the plates, features changes over the previous, model, but the most significant is the motor, which is based on the 450 and 500 XC-W motor that we saw earlier last year on 2012 big-bore off-road The single, rather than overhead cam motor is significantly in overall size and lighter in (4.4 pounds lighter, in and, thanks to a completely starter motor system and tweaks, has far less spinning in the motor, which reduces masses and reciprocating weight.

The frame is narrower, has thinner tubes and other modifications to lateral rigidity and overall of the frame, but overall geometry the same. It also has new machined anodized triple clamps and and is fitted with a fully 48mm USD WP closed-cartridge fork and WP

On the track, the bike still very much like the model but with a few noticeable — almost all for the better.

The KTM was known for its incredibly powerful and the new one is very powerful, too. It to have better bark off the while pulling just as in the middle as it ever did. it doesn’t quite feel as strong way up top and revs out a bit sooner the carbureted 450 SX-F. However, not a game-changer. As one of our testers put it, the trade off for punch off the bottom and a little over-rev on top is well worth it.

But don’t get us wrong, the KTM is still fast across the board.

we experienced earlier with the XC’s, throttle response is and clean.

Lifting the bike on and off the the KTM still feels a little on the side. Even though the is lighter, it gained some of weight back because of the new system. The good news is, that on the track, the bike much lighter and more than before, which has a lot to do all that less reciprocating in the motor.

In fact, the difference is remarkable, you feel it if you’ve ridden the 450 SX-F. The motor runs and you just don’t feel movement of the piston like you did on the bike. There’s still a hit of felt in the handlebars but not nearly as as before.

The bike feels and narrow, but the midsection of the bike feels a little wider, is a good thing, really, you have something better with your legs, is a gripe we had with the previous

Suspension seems to be right in the but we would’ve been happy to been able to spend a bit time dialing in the forks to feel in the rutted turns and chop, but, otherwise, the is pretty darn good out of the crate.

Seat padding is extremely probably too soft for most but we actually liked it. However, if this soft now, we what it will be like the road.

We’ll have on the KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition in a future of Cycle News, but we can safely say our first impression of the bike is a one.

The first batch of 200 Factory Edition models start showing up on dealer floors in March, followed by 200 in June. The MSRP will be $9500, which will KTM’s EFI User Setting (a $500 value) for adjusting the and ignition.

The Factory Edition is also as a 2012 model.
