KTM-s RC8 was the most eagerly awaited of 2008. Not only did it mark important and very big step for the factory in its expansion into the bike market, the flagship KTM was an new player in the high profile, big sector.

The bike certainly all the specification buyers in this expect: liquid-cooled V-twin producing 153bhp (155PS, a light, 415lb (188kg) weight and high quality including WP suspension, Brembo brake callipers and so on. What-s promising is KTM-s exciting, attitude and willingness to take all of its road bikes to date been hard edged, oriented and a thrill to ride, so a superbike surely was going to be the of the lot.

It-s not classically looking in the way of Ducati-s 1098/1198, against that the Italian is rather derivative, if undeniably and classy too. But the KTM is certainly and well balanced visually.

Good reasons for a significant of people to have placed on new RC8s even before the test reports emerged, so they disappointed?

Mostly no, but might have been by the riding position the first they swung a leg across the Far from the Ducati-type, wrist track … ergonomics you expect, the RC8 is almost sports

Well, it-s sports with the bars, footrests and adjusted that way — all of these can be tailored to suit the or riding, and for our road ride on twisty back lanes in Andalusia they were into their most settings. With them like this you-re sat upright with plenty of even for longer legs, yet the low screen does an excellent job of the airflow without excessive sufficient for cruising way in excess of road speeds indefinitely. comfort is good too: if not plush it-s still for several hours on board, and the mirrors are wide enough to see behind you — well, you if they didn-t shake and so badly.

The engine works well in pace riding too, huge midrange torque and fuelling at medium throttle although on a very light in the lower gears there-s a hunting and abruptness. But generally good.

All of which is a little for KTM, as the bike-s very is really not something the company is keen to trumpet, as this goes against its pure-sports, image. So, off to the fabulous Ascari track near Ronda in Spain where the RC8 could off what it-s really to do, and here it acquitted itself too.

But even with the adjusted for circuit use it-s nowhere near as committed as an and still on full lock the of your hands clash the mirrors, which if you-re bulky knuckle protectors can interfere with full low speed steering. Ah well, a few never hurt the Italians.

a fine track bike yet very different to the 1198, comparisons initially were with the old 1098 of course. And a 1098 has heavy steering the RC8 more eagerly to rider then turns very towards the corner apex, so so that it took me several to adapt and stop myself to re-evaluate a too-tight line.

Even so, it-s still stable in turns, or it is once the is set up for circuit riding: on road the front end is choppy and unsettled, but KTM recommend base settings to from so you-re not on your own you take it out on a track day. The however is also more and lighter steering than the and comes closer to matching it in so the Austrian bike-s advantage was

What you also have to is not to keep revving the engine. As it the red line the power delivery a little flat so it-s not as as it might be, but anyway, once got used to changing up a gear at which is 1,000 revs of the peak, all of a sudden your points move towards you a few as your speed rises and lap fall, and the power train more comfortable generally.

The mid-range torque is huge in happy to slog out of corners very low down and still you forward hard, to a clear of hammering pistons and shuddering that adds to the sensual as well as the stopwatch one. The has a performance edge though, and a one where the 1098 was only a quicker — it has more and more torque across the and with the KTM-s agility reduced in the 1198 comparison the bike will certainly be around a track.

The RC8-s is poor and not only interferes track riding, it gets in the way of gelling with the bike. turns with the fierce working hard, you need to on banging the lever down the ratios firmly enough or you can end up in intermediate neutral, which you coasting wide-eyed into a far too fast. And even when the mesh they do so with a you can feel with your as well as hear.

Upchanges need less movement than going which doesn-t feel natural, and on rare occasions the will jump out of gear after you-ve changed up. The gears are unusual though and you do but definitely room for improvement

Those immense Brembos at the as on the 1198, are great for track use but be just too strong for many on the road, especially in poor Two fingers are plenty to rip the tread your tyres, but you need of predictable grip to use them near their potential, and don-t always give you

Thanks to its CAN-bus digital system the RC8 can at least match the with the comprehensiveness of its dash. can be set for road or track and tell you from lap times to service to how far you can go on the fuel you have left. last piece of information never be that great as the 3.6 gallon (16.5 litres, 4.4 US) will probably mean by 100 miles (160km) or so, although still better than the pathetic 3.5 gallons (15.5 4.1 gallons US) to dry.

The KTM is usefully cheaper than a model Ducati though, but if it anything of substance in a direct it also loses out to the heritage and of the Italian bike as much as its and that-s something only of superbike dominance can put right, the RC8 won-t be achieving. Even so, as a left-field alternative to the default superbike, and despite its imperfections, the KTM has a lot to including wild looks and matching performance. Just quiet about the versatility.
