KTM 350 SX-F

New order

Test by Todd Pics by Chris Pickett

The of the all new KTM 350SX-F has sparked worldwide and is the latest open class from the KTM factory. Inspired by MX Stefan Everts, the 350cc is aimed at taking control of the MX class and is KTM’s flagship in the big-bore category. An all new creation the ground up, the 350 has got all the bells and whistles, and is one of the most creative and innovative bikes in recent history, and already got runs on the board by a world championship.

A 350cc up against a pack of 450s is no task, and it’s a very move by KTM to campaign a smaller bike up against the biggest and motocross bikes on the planet. The is out on this machine, and as the new race begins we will soon out if 350cc is capable of putting it to away from the factory-backed GP

Cast your mind a few months and you will remember we impressed when Cycle got to ride the 2011 KTM range in 2010 at the KTM MX range launch: so so we decided it would be a great to give it a more thorough on familiar turf at our own MX test in the NSW Hunter Valley.

The engine is obviously the big ticket here, it is a computer designed, built 350cc, four-valve water-cooled, four-… powerplant. not a big bore 250F and it’s not a down 450F. It’s a up brand new concept 350cc

Look beyond the … eye and you find a host of top notch features on the new KTM: there is a five-speed gearbox, Keihin Fuel Injection, Magura clutch and possibly the most new feature – electric start.

As as you take off down the track you notice that the 350cc is full of life and has plenty of under the hood. After a few personal adjustment to the cockpit we to settle into a rhythm on the 350 and down some competitive The motor is certainly the most part of the 350SX-F, it is very to adapt to and is very confidence

It’s free-revving and wants to be hard like a small 250F yet much more and punchy. It’s got good off the bottom and is at its strongest through the mid and top

Chassis Suspension

An all new chassis was for the KTM SX-F range in 2011. to their beliefs and what for the orange bikes, the KTM engineers their Chromoly Steel added extra torsional and a new shock mounting system. The top of the now mounts to what some consider to be a sub-frame which is towards the rear of the chassis.

is aimed at taking the rear forces away from the of the chassis and to isolate the shock to the mounting frame built the rear of current chassis.

The KTM four-strokes now come with a system, something consumers been crying out for. will be the first time the brand will incorporate a in their production line, well a very long ago. Once again for KTM have enlisted the services of WP to handle all of their suspension the range is similar to what can be on any 2010 SX-F model, with obvious modifications to the new chassis and linkage.

After into a good pace the motocross track and getting to the KTM it was time to give the suspension a and see what this 350 was all about. For equipment the 350 suspension works in most across the board We made some clicker during the day to get the most out of the WP suspension, we the standard setting to be a little bit and we worked on calming down the of the suspension to make things a bit comfortable on the rider, which we

While the 350 is the talk of the paddock and is all the glitz and glamour, the 450 received its share of updates and hasn’t completely unnoticed by the Austrian We thought it would only be to bring out the big guns and ride the 450 on the day as the 350, this would us a more accurate comparison of how bike stacks up in the big bore and how competitive these two bikes Once again KTM came up the goods and bought along a 450SX-F for us to have a play on.

The big-bore KTM got an all new chassis along the rest of the fleet, and also got the new linkage system. A new swingarm the new shock/linkage/chassis system and also around 300g when to the previous model. Also on is a new wheels front and rear.

The KTM have gone back to Excel rims, instead of the they have been in production for a while now, and have a new coating on the spokes and nipples. Last but not least the 450 the all new bodywork on the 2011 KTM SX-F all new plastics and graphics make for an modern new look.

On the track

The KTM 450SX-F is equipped a Keihin Carburettor and is jetted right off the showroom floor, we have no problems with the old carby on the 450 as it does everything we ask and it would be nice to see KTM look at EFI on big bore thumper. Verdict: after a long day at the office the KTM 350SX-F and 450SX-F we were all pretty tired. The test was not so to find a “winner” out of these two more so to see how they both fit today’s open class market.

On tracks where rules then it would be to look past the power and of the 450. It was so much fun trying to use all the underneath the bonnet of the big KTM. Add tight lines and big bumps and enough the smaller 350 comes play as it feels that bit and easier to ride as the laps and all your energy get left

It would be a hard decision to between the two, and there are things to consider if you are in the market for of these bikes, but you can’t make a bad decision – both are good machines.
