KTM Duke is a motorcycle series of the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM.

The single-cylinder Duke was from 1994 to 1999, built the Duke II in 1999 until 2006. Both model together sold a total of 12,550 times. The successor of the Duke II, the 690 Duke (Duke unofficially III), came on the market in spring 2008. With model year 2012 (Duke IV) the appearance was greatly changed in the Naked Bike to appeal to a wider range of customers.

On the technical side, the revised engine (dual ignition, ride-by-wire system) of the previous Duke R 690 and the Duke 690 got an ABS (antilock brake system).

The V2 engine equipped with a Super Duke was introduced to the market in 2005.

In the lower capacity class two models with 125 or 200 cc are produced.

The Duke was designed by KTM Supermoto due to the then-emerging wave and was built more than 80 percent from existing serial parts of the off-road models.

The Duke was initially available with two different engine versions — the 609 cc LC4 engine (referred to as 620) and in a small series with the 400 cc LC4 engine. The First Edition consisted of a total of 500 aircraft, of which 450 pieces in the 620s and 50 in the 400 version. This was only available in the color orange.

The 1995 model year received some modifications such as the Bowden cable-controlled decompression. As Black was only available.

In 1996 was followed by a further revised version. The engine has been significantly modified, and he received a new engine case now with two oil pumps, a digital ignition and an electric starter. The color of this model year was yellow.

1997 represented a more stringent emissions regulations unregulated catalytic converter and a secondary air system necessary. As Black was available.

1998 was the last year of the first Duke of models. It was built in a limited edition of 400 pieces again. Here came a completely revised engine is used, which then ushered in the era of the successor Duke II. The engine capacity was increased by a new crankshaft with longer stroke 2 mm to 625 cc.

The color of this model year was orange again.

1999, a completely redesigned successor to the Duke was presented, the 640 Duke II is probably the most striking change was striking in the Cyclops headlight mask look. When the engine it was built for the 1998 625 cc single-cylinder LC4, but now, so that performance rose with a double muffler system and a new CV carburetors in all speed ranges. Chassis side lighter cast wheels were used.

The motorcycles were partially built according to color, limited edition.

The colors of the Duke II

By 2003, virtually no model of care was operated, the only changes were limited to new colors.

In 2003, the Duke II was then revised again. The engine was modified and was next to a modified engine housing and a flow-optimized high-flow cylinder head (indicated by the gray color), who among other larger exhaust valves. Furthermore, a hydraulically operated clutch and a floating front brake disc were added the wheels were no longer supplied by BBS but by Brembo, which also changed the front disc mount.

2004, some changes were made again. Again, stricter emissions regulations made a secondary air system necessary. A new upside-down fork, a new clutch basket were used.

2006 production of Duke II was set. The clearance sales were still up to the year 2007. The only color available was Orange with orange rims (picture).

The 690 Duke, also called Duke III, was introduced in late September 2007 and sold in the spring of 2008.

The bike has the space frame of chrome-molybdenum steel (weight just over 9 kg) and the die-cast aluminum swingarm, which are already in use 690 Supermoto model. The chassis consists of a fully adjustable 48 mm upside-down fork adjustable front and also a central spring strut and 140 mm spring travel offers. Both components come from the KTM subsidiary WP suspension.

The front brake is a radial-mount four-piston calipers with four individual brake pads and Brembo floating disc with 320 mm diameter. Behind the 690 Duke has a single-piston caliper brake (also by Brembo). Using a 240-mm disc

Striking feature of the 690 Duke is the Under-engine muffler made of stainless steel, which provides in terms of the concentration of masses around the center of gravity benefits and serves as a better handling.

³ The all-new LC4 engine with a displacement of 654 cm has an electronic Keihin EMS injection system with a 46-mm throttle body, which is (in addition to manual control by the throttle) is controlled electronically. The engine makes the 690 Duke maximum 48 kW (65 hp) and a maximum torque of 67 Nm. The emissions control in a controlled catalytic converter. A side frame mounted on the rotary switch, it is possible to select three different mappings:

1 Soft: reduced power for better drivability, low Lastwechselreakionen

2 Sport: the case of the throttle control motor to a virtually linear with the throttle position, providing a more aggressive, more direct power delivery, but with strong load-change reactions.

3 Default: normal engine management with normal load change reactions and response ausgelichenem

The power transmission from the engine to the rear wheel via a hydraulically actuated multi-plate oil-bath slipper clutch, a mesh 6-speed gearbox and an X-ring chain.

The first two colors are Orange / Black and White / Black.

The 690 Duke R was also offered from the 2010 model year as a sports oriented variant with a displacement of 690 cc. At the same bore, the stroke was lengthened. The rated power of the motor is 51.5 kW (70 hp) at 7500 rpm, maximum torque 70 Nm.

The frame is orange, the plastic parts are black / white / orange held.

The Duke IV (ABS) released in early 2012 and has produced the biggest single cylinder (70 hp, twin-spark ignition, drive-by-wire) that was used in serial motorcycle production ever. Fork and shock absorber are not adjustable and the dip pipe diameter of the fork was reduced from 48 to 43mm. It is not equipped with the Under-engine muffler, but has a strong upward-sloping rear muffler made of stainless steel.

By the DLC coating on the connecting rod bearing inspection intervals were increased from 7,500 to 10,000 km. The seat height has been reduced by 3 cm. Compared to the models I-III, the new design is more conservative and now unique to the segment Naked Bike.

The detailing is not quite as high as the previous model (easier handlebars, kickstand, etc.), but the new model will be offered much cheaper.

The 990 Super Duke is the first very sporty street machine by KTM. It is to be categorized naked bike and streetfighter.

In 2002, the 950 Super Duke was first introduced to the public at Intermot. Style-forming elements were already of the 9 kg light tube frame made of chrome molybdenum steel and edged attachments. A short time later it was announced that the Super Duke is not driven by the 942-cc engine, the LC8 Adventure enduro, but by a new 999-cc version with fuel injection.

Different development stages were presented at exhibitions and fairs since, until they finally came in 990 Super Duke in 2005 in the trade.

It is driven from the outset by the liquid-cooled 75 ° V2, four-stroke engine (LC8) with 999 cc displacement, fuel injection, a power rating of 88 kW (120 hp) and maximum torque of 100 Nm. The curb weight is with a full tank about 199 kg.

The colors of the Super Duke:

For model year 2007, the Super Duke has undergone a major facelift for the first time. She received some subtle visual changes (light cover, front fender, speedo), a larger tank (plus 3.5 liters to 18.5 liters), Brembo radial-mount front calipers and a new engine management system, which complies with the EURO 3 standard and widely criticized the high consumption lowered. Moreover, the suspension geometry has been changed slightly in favor of more stability.

As an additional variant, the 990 Super Duke R has been added to the program. This is a more sporty, single-seat version, which differs in their equipment to the base model. Thus, the 48-mm slide tubes of WP Suspension upside-down fork is titanium nitride coated and an adjustable steering damper is to prevent front wheel kickbacks.

Rake and caster were changed again in the direction of better handling with the R version.

For 2008, the engine of the Super Duke R has been revised so that the ratings increased by 12 hp to 132 hp. Have been amended to include the intake valves, camshafts and throttle, is further fitted as standard an exhaust manifold of Akrapovič. For 2012, the normal variant and the Super Duke R were summarized.

There is now only the Super Duke R. As engine power 125 hp can be specified. The chassis was acquired adapted from the Super Duke R. The model is available only with two seats and in one color.
