Make an

When I first rode 950 Supermoto model early year I was most impressed, and it as the most practical all round yet to come from the Austrian

An excellent fuel range and that proved friendly to see me cover 2000 kilometres in a over 24 hours made a of the ‘Supermoto’ model tag that the bike would be uncomfortable and KTM eventually realised just how the 950 Supermoto was.

With the of the larger and much more fuel injected 999cc for 2009, the 950 Supermoto became the 990 and was then split into two models.

The 990 Supermoto R, and the 990 Supermoto enough the R model is slightly spartan, boasts sexier and livelier war paint.

It is also seven kilograms than the T thanks to forged, than cast, Marchesini’s and bodywork.

The T still gets the 115 horsepower v-twin, fully WP suspension and radial mounted brakes.

So there has been no detuning of the engine or the running but the same full monty KTM 990 as the R.

The T does gain the extra of better wind and weather thanks to a frame mounted cowling and screen, a better that includes reasonable accommodations, mounts for saddlebags into the muffler heatshields, a rack with passenger handles, a slightly lower height and four more of fuel in the tank.

Effectively, the 990 Supermoto T has improved was already KTM’s best world roadbike,

the 950 Supermoto, a more powerful, more and more highly equipped than before. Now, what I call progress!

My run from KTM’s Sydney to Melbourne’s northern outskirts in some of Australia’s best

After the boring highway down to Canberra to make at home on the KTM I then covered the ribbons of blacktop (and a dirt) between Tharwa,Adaminaby, Tintaldra, Walwa, Granya, Mt. Bright, Whitfield, through to and then a bit of dirt between Doon and Eildon before the very wet run home to Melbourne.

All up, 1000 kilometres of fantastic in all manner of challenging conditions, to what is a very fine

The KTM 990 SMT performed flawlessly throughout the and was a more than willing for any of my more adventurous shenanigans.

a generous 180mm of rear … matched to 160mm of travel the WP gear shrugged off any

The ride is always comfortable and the KTM floats along any manner of with no hint of a kidney to the rider, no matter what’s at it. Even reasonable sojourns off are well within the 990 SMT’s

When exiting corners the spring travel at the rear excessive before the shock it under control.

Likewise at the other end, the struggle to cope with the bite of the four-piston Brembos.

with such long suspenders, there are always to be some compromises and on standard that shows as a fair bit of and aft pitching when riding

However, the 990 SMT always regains its and overall really does the boundary between sporting and touring on standard settings well.

It certainly has more on sumptuous than hard sporting though and thanks to the gamut of suspension adjustments at our we will spend some honing the SMT’s sporting

The charismatic and quite unique v-twin engine sounds while delivering the goods. A mid-range makes picking up the wheel child’s play and the follows through to a willing top

KTM claim 115hp @ 9000rpm and 97 Nm @ so it clearly likes a good

The engine is smoothest when above 4000rpm.

Below mark the fuel injection quite match the crispness of its predecessor. That bike was painful when cold but the EFI of the new takes care of all the cold kerfuffle.

The 990 SMT is staying with us for time yet and as our relationship grows we learn how to get the best from the KTM and on our findings in due course.

As it is, KTM’s 990 SMT is one of the well rounded roadbike ever to go on sale. By the time we are with it I am sure it will be an back road brawler.

First we will spend time dialling in the suspension examining the luggage options and a bit more bite with the Akrapovic mufflers.
