My First KTM!

I loved the design of the original A classic and the first production type of bike. Also first street oriented

The 1998 Duke 640 Last had the same colors als the first from 1993. I just had to it.

It was a different galaxy coming from a Triumph Speed It took me weeks to get a little to the total absence of weight and The superfast handling and the short short of breath but punchy LC4

But then madness took This bike turned you a mouth-foaming nutcase the moment you the starter button. The city an MX circuit and B-roads a racetrack.

dented more ego’s of (Sports)bikers and had more fun with bike than with any so far. Brilliant. I even it to the South of France and back.

the 3.5 years I had the Duke it was tweaked, and modded to pieces.

After 2 I swapped the bodywork for all black the 1995 model, the best IMO.

660 Factory Rally

With help from my and a bit of luck I was able to get my hands on a 660 Rally engine. This really finished 8th overall in 2000 and even second in the leg to Dakar in the hands of Dutch Henk Knuiman. It was completely rebuild by the factory and Dutch KTM Brouwer Motors.

Thanx Eddie!

Took me a day to get rid of the rally look. I swapped the and alternator cover for new ones and 3 old toothbrushes and a gallon of WD40 to the desert dust from all corners etc. But then it was as as a baby again.

With a street legal SXC Enduro from KTM and stock opened up the power increase is some 4/5 HP 54 to 55 HP at the rear wheel. That alone isn’t earth-shaking but the in feel and character of a 660 is. Rally are not tuned for top-end power Torque, midrange power and are more important when through the desert. The much torque and longer … a 660 engine a misleading easy and feel.

The power output is and strange enough smoother less vibration than a 620 or Very good. Some

Factory (hand)build

Bore 102 x 80 654cc

Forged piston

Gas head

Higher compression

Reinforced rocker-arm mountings

crank big-end

(Very) clutch. auch.

Akrapovic Ti race exhaust

This system is a work of art. never seen such a made exhaust and, as it out later, never seen a good exhaust performance-wise

This system is a replica of the build for the KTM factory SM bikes. In it’s identical apart the headerpipe(s) to make it suitable for engines. Besides the short steel headers it’s made from titanium and as as air. Picking it up makes jaw drop in disbelief.

The extremely low made me even a bit worried to it while putting it on my bike. as it’s probably stronger the original steel KTM items. It a good 4 KG over a stock with SXC silencer.

The entire is conical. From the mounting-flanges in the head right up to the end-cap of the At the the silencer the pipe-diameter is a whopping (pictured).

That’s almost 15mm than the stock pipe looks like a drinking by comparison.

Don’t be fooled by the big though. This system is And I mean VERY LOUD. really offensive but the tone is so A very low, deep bark. Just like bike. -)

After a test-ride and a run on the you’ll have a tough being civilized and remove it I had to fit a main jet 3 sizes smaller than with the KTM SXC exhaust. The of this system is that The engine is transformed. Even the is better from the first on.

No less than 6 HP power to 61 HP and 67 Nm torque at the rear wheel. The 660 revs out really fast and on to max power for almost 1500 When the power gradually to drop between 8000 and RPM the gain over the stock with SXC silencer is a mind-blowing 12 HP.

KN airfilter

Ever had any about the small airbox on Duke I e-start models? they are valid. When the KTM SM team was in Venray Holland for a in the European SM Championship we had a close at the factory bikes.

They run KN filters straight on the without an airbox in sight. My towards the little asthmatic airbox was confirmed. I just had to such a filter on my bike

With the help of the pictures we allowed to take, a special mounting bracket was made a BIG alloy pipe to fit the KN filter and the distance over the upper point of the shock to the carb. like on the factory bikes. up where some hours on the KN to figure out what was the biggest that would fit and clear all the parts like the battery

Done! Works great and clean tidy too. setup was a bit difficult but after fiddling on the dyno it’s on. Throttle response is much and a general power increase the rev range of 1 to 3 HP and 2 to 5 Nm torque. And you never to change or clean the filter

There are downsides too. KN are not suitable for real dirt and you get A LOT of intake noise! But it’s a kinda sound. BRRROOOAAAAHH.

Spiegler full floating iron disk

What’s with the stock front and gorgeous looking stock on a Duke? you might wonder. not that much actually but can always be better as this proves. The stock setup has of power, especially with from Carbon Lorraine but it from two problems:

1. Most front ends screech Mine always did, the pads used. Very

2. The initial bite is good, on to much with CL pads but in the end it feel and progression.

This looking piece of German engineering from Spiegler really good and is a big improvement on the setup. A kit consists of a disk selected Ferrodo pads. The carrier is a feather-light alloy CNC job and the ring is Cast Iron stuff that rusts in one

It’s fully floating and nice ‘n cozy noises when the bike is at traffic lights etc. look at the pedestrians passing by. -)

The characteristics and stability at different of Cast Iron is far superior to steel. The first bite is softer than stock and the power progresses linear the lever-pressure gradually building to a level the stock setup can dream of. The clear feel in the from gently whipping of to brute eyeball popping is in a different league. Temperature seem to play any role.

From stone cold to red hot the behaves exactly the same. And all takes place with a hissss without any screech or Very impressive.

A no brainer IMO. A big thumbs up!
