WHAT IS IT? The cheapest motocross exhaust you can buy for the KTM 450SXF.

IT COST? $299.00.

WHAT’S IT DO? You be too young to remember Terry as one of the greatest motorcycle drag in history. Terry and tuning-genius Byron Hines turned attention to their Vance exhaust pipe company time when Terry’s career wound down. Two ago, Vance Hines the White Brothers offroad business.

It wasn’t a perfect at first. The White Brothers had their fame in motocross, VH specialized in road racing (as official factory Superbike for almost a decade) and drag But after the wrinkles were out, Vance Hines to go whole hog into the motocross business.

Unlike many of their in motocross, Vance Hines to focus on building affordable exhaust systems for Yamahas, Hondas, Suzukis and KTMs. Hines believes that the OEM head pipes, often from titanium, are more adequate for the job, so they on what happens after the pipe (although they do head pipes and complete MXA focused on the KTM 450SXF slip-on).

The MXA wrecking crew decided to our 2010 KTM 450SXF with a Hines XCR slip-on to see if an under-$300 could deliver the performance we looking for.

WHAT OUT? Here’s a list of that stand out with the Hines XCR slip-on exhaust

(1) Installation. Nothing could be When you don’t have to with the exhaust flange or pipe, a lot of the hassles of changing disappear (especially on the KTM, removing the pipe often removing the shock).

(2) Dyno On the dyno, it produced less one horsepower more at peak, but it was one stronger from 5000 rpm to rpm, and produced two to three horsepower from 9500 rpm to rpm.

(3) Performance. The stock KTM 450SXF is a motocross bike in that it power slowly off the bottom and magnifies it tenfold as it turns a midrange monster. Every MXA rider felt that the Hines pipe added a layer of power off idle the midrange and really cooked on the top (from 9000 rpm to sign-off).

The VH XCR actually enhanced the weakest of the KTM’s powerband by pumping up the transition, and that got the big Katoom the meat of the powerband quicker and let it harder on top.

(4) Options. We tested the XCR slip-on, but VH make a stainless/aluminum system stainless head pipe) for and the Ti Pro titanium system (with head and canister) for $849.95.

(5) The KTM is the hardest pipe to build a for. Why? KTM’s head pipe is a one-piece with its midpipe.

Thus, an slip-on only gets to about six inches of midpipe and the muffler’s length, core and volume.

(6) Sound. It was very quiet at dB (although the stocker was actually VH is very conscientious about quiet pipes.

WHAT’S THE We expected a bigger power because the VH slip-ons that we on CRFs, KX-Fs, RM-Zs and have produced power that rival many systems. KTM’s unique head/midpipe cuts down on the options.

Although not a stump of a pipe, at $299.00 the horsepower is nothing to sneeze at. It improves the of the 450SXF’s powerband and is an affordable way to power.
