Project Moto: 2012 KTM 250 Update 4

The development continues on current long-term test

It’s been a little since we last posted an on’s Project Moto model KTM 250 SX-F, but within period we’ve had the opportunity to a couple of very crucial that almost every considers when they lay cash on a new ride.

First up, we delivery of a brand new Akrapovic exhaust system. Only through KTM’s ever-trusty catalogue (see pricing this exhaust is one of the best you could buy for a KTM of any type.

From the of the titanium sections of the exhaust to the carbon end-cap on the muffler, deserves 10 points simply for Compared to the two-piece unit comes stock, this is main sections and does a little effort to get on.

After we undid the rear without removing it was all systems go, the system between the frame and before putting it all back again. It was a reasonably lengthy but one that includes straightforward and the fit is spot on.

Once on the track the exhaust is clearly deeper and barks little bit stronger, although not loud like some systems. I would say it’s about right, but most the performance gains are very and very noticeable.

The engine harder and for longer as you’d in some ways, but the big thing for me is how it the power available. In sections the gearing would feel too previously or where the bike start to lose power in the RPM range (where you really be riding a 250F), it’s now so better.

Don’t get me wrong, the of the standard bike is strong and friendly, however the way it’s with the exhaust seems to my style that much The bonus with KTM is that you need to do any fuel injection adjustments to suit the power – KTM caters for the Akrapovic system in its settings.

So between having the to rev the engine for longer and hold plus the general benefits of quicker up hills or out of the gates, the of getting the system is definitely it in my opinion and experience.

Interestingly, when we dyno the bike this week at KTM east coast base the JDR/KTM Factory Racing is located, the results explained why I was what I was on track. The initial and torque curve was vastly to stock, but once at the maximum RPM power is produced, it maintains power for longer.

In total we’re looking at a of just over two horsepower (up 34 to the high 36s), but it’s the way the power is gained that the most difference for me. Stay for a film to come next as we detail the benefits of the system and have Rob Twyerould from KTM about the Akrapovic’s gains.

I have been stoked the engine’s performance of late as really gotten my head it and the exhaust has made me gel with it much more. Combined the chassis, the bike definitely like my own and every single that we have made to the simply customizes it to my liking. In if this were my personal these mods are exactly I’d do.

From the start I was happy the standard suspension until I to a track with more At that point I’d thought it may be to get it suited to me specifically, but then I actually got the clickers right and the way the suspension operates (mostly the way the rebounds) then its actually rates were good for my

At a fast, general track like Appin, the behaves without a hitch. The is by far my favourite point and has been I first rode the current of KTM’s 250 SX-F when it was ahead of 2011. It just so good for my level of riding, a nice ergonomic package works for me.

The front Pirelli MX eXTra X is magic, too.

You may that I had fitted a KTM Powerparts seat before my last but at this stage I’m not 100 percent on it. Yes, it does have its for shorter riders, but as a rider who down a lot when turning, I’m not that I find it better stock.

Regardless though, KTM has a number of in the catalogue when it comes to so if you are looking for something other standard, check it out. stuck with the lower for now, but have considered back to stock at times.

are clear on track, perhaps more so than on the dyno. Charise Weston.

I mentioned earlier in the piece and one vital we’ve done is taken of a Serco Custom MX Decals kit from our friends at Serco. we’ve taken delivery of of a kit, because I was reluctant to out the standard embedded KTM radiator graphics just yet.

The embedded design that on the SX-F models is pretty how it can’t peel off or get caught up at all on braces, etc, but the only is that they do start to through it and make the bike age if the type of rider to clamp with your knees.

Personally, mine’s only begun to wear through, so I’m so far than happy with the design and performance. Serco has decals for the plates, fenders, guards and swingarm though, allow us to brand the bike in logos for a nice final

I can say that they’re the easier I’ve ever stuck on and priced very reasonably, right here in Australia pricing below). The KTM’s plastic design helps but even a few times when I them on wrong, I simply it off where I had to and started again losing any foreseeable stickiness.

stayed on too, surviving and then the post-race pressure while I clean things up That’s why they’re designed to do and the guys at Serco do have a thing going on up there in since rebranding from SPP and the process. That’s probably why a of factory MX teams in Australia use product.

It’s been a great to date riding and updating the KTM 250 in 2012. Soon enough going to come to a conclusion next year’s models to roll out later in the year, but for we’ll keep on riding and every minute of it. The reliability and of the bike for what I need been every bit as good as I hope for, which is a testament to KTM.
