22 months and 16500 miles of KTM 990 ownership. I feel I am now qualified to on the ownership experience of the large I arrived in adventurebikeland after 30 of large sports tourers, Pan and K series BMWs, a whole of small capacity Japanese and at one point a Harley Davidson sportster.

I bought my first bike. a 650 Honda Transalp. I fancied something lighter and economical than the Honda Pan but almost immediately missed the of the Pan. not all the time. just two up and those hurried overtakes we all do at point. What the Transalp did do was hook me into the adventure thing.

I always struggle for words to the difference between a tourer and an bike — it’s thing that makes you to go down that side just because it’s and makes you wonder where it You don’t do that on a traditional for some reason. I would passed the side road on the Pan as it ate the to my original destination.

It’s thing that makes you out the back roads and less routes. it’s that the keeps you late for tea. you’ve found something interesting to look for. as I say, The Transalp just a little oomph when you it. So a more powerful trailie was

It boiled down to a straight between the KTM 990 and the BMW1200GS. The BMW is a good in fact a great bike, and I have been happy to own it. I but the £2000 difference in cost for spec’d bikes and the general of the BMW dealer. swung the deal in of the KTM.

So how has it been over the year and ten months. It’s a great handling, beautifully sounding with superb road It’s quite comfortable distance. having covered o Groats to land’s End and back in two and the only real ache was my wrist (holding the throttle in a position). a Crampbuster throttle thingy was purchased the day after the charity ride. I use my bikes all round for commuting and it has been

The general finsh of the bike has up well to the two West of Scotland it has endured. just some (and I mean VERY) corrosion on one or two spokes in the front

For a claimed overlander it does a fairly limited fuel (19.5 litres /4.3 which gives a modest range at (the approx) it returns. You can get as much as 47- 48MPG if you are on a journey and behave. but for normal commuting and exploring, it’s 42mpg.

The bike came ABS and Hepco and Becker Gobi as standard fit. The aftermarket catalogue is fairly extensive and my is equiped with. the matching HB crashbars. Akraprovic cans sweet music!!), tripmaster ( to transfer the dashboard functions to a on the handlebar), alarm and heated

All this is from the KTM catalogue. I have a heavy duty radiator guard, rearbrake cyclinder cover. large pedal and fatfoot on the side from the Rugged Roads

The general reliability has good. I can report only one oh with an early life of the fuel pump at 1600 The back-up from KTM and their was excellent on that occaision. the came to pick-up my bike a van. brought a loaner and swapped them over. it — no drama.

Servicing is required every miles, alternating between a service at 4500 and a large at 9000. the engine is quite about it’s bucket clearances and that takes on the 9000 service.

Time money of course. Small around £200 — services around £400.

is good. power. sound, road presence. comfort

is not so good. fuel capacity, costs.

I also like of the quirkyness of the Austrian design. the look. and things like the saddle tanks with twin filler caps starts a converstion at filling

The KTM 990 range has had a slight makeover for with some extra HP out the LC8 mill. fresh graphics and the S ( higher suspension, no ABS, offroad focused) now called the R but basically the same as the 2006 2008 models.

Would I have another. Yes no hesitation. but not yet. I love one too much and have no reason to not even for the few extra HP of the 2009
