Test Ride: 2004 KTM 200 SX – Rider

Tuesday, February 24,

KTM never has been very and many even peg the odd-size (300, 360, 380, 540 and 550 two-strokes) as the factor that put the back on the map after a financial in the early ’90s. But at least bikes all fall within the for the Open class; they aren’t common, traditional, sizes. It isn’t that dirt bikes are uncommon, but is an SX, KTM’s full-blown motocross

And 200cc moto machines are rare, since there is no class in motocross. On the other amateur races have age for 25-, 30-, 40- and 50-year-olds. riders in those classes the light weight and frantic of 125cc bikes but race in age filled with ultra-fast four-strokes.

Good luck off a start on a 125 against a gate with 250 two-strokes and 450 four-strokes.

Now that the KTM 125 SX makes 36 horsepower. just say this bike has a at a start against bigger giant power in a 125cc and weight package, the 200 SX isn’t the machine for every rider, but for who love small, light and motorcycles, this bike install a permanent grin on face. Motor Time

Since this bike is in respects a bored-and-stroked KTM 125 SX, the chassis new, but the motor is. This parts-bin engineering where KTM an existing chassis and slipped a 200 engine in it. The gear ratios are the as on the close-ratio M/XC, but the 200 SX engine is closely related to the 125 SX than to the 200 version.

It has the SX-style power and motocross-oriented porting. In addition, the uses a lighter SX ignition but to smooth the 200′s powerful the flywheel is the same one KTM 380 SX models with! In addition, there is a ignition map in the black box.

The other internal engine between 2003 and 2004 is a new governor. The 200 E/XC models Rider has tested have had a hit in the lower one-third of the rpm range can be hard to control in slippery They rev fine for off-road but are too flat on top for motocross-style riding. The 200 SX have more torque and than a 125 SX, but the character of this is more like a 125 than a 250.

The serious torque later in the rpm range than the 200 E/XC or 250 SX, but the power builds rapidly with rpm. the throttle is wide open, is no way to mistake the 200 SX for any 125–stock or modified. We KTM how much more horsepower the 200 and the engineers were pretty It makes a little more power than the 125 but has more That prompted a closer at the specs for both bikes.

The transmissions for the 125 and 200 are identical for all internal The 125 is geared 13/50, but the 200 is geared That’s equivalent to nine on the rear sprocket. Considering we rarely make gearing of more than one tooth, the in gearing for these two bikes is

We sent the 200 to the same dyno measured our 125 SX, and it cranked out a little than 38 horsepower. We compared the graph with the one for the ’04 125cc-class shootout, and the 200 was equal to or better the best of the 250cc four-strokes the rpm range. That means the 200 SX is up as as 5 horsepower in the middle rpm area.

makes it a sweet motor. We the 200 at four tracks (five if you both tracks at LACR): I-5 MX at Glen Helen Raceway, Los County Raceway and Piru MX. It had of power to handle any of the tracks. Helen has a long, fast, start straightaway, and the 200 is big fun there. most 125s, the 200 will pull second gear off the gate then rows the gears hard with no at any shift.

And that was with a 200-pound aboard! The Rest

It should as no surprise that the chassis the 200 with the 125 feels much the on the track. Basically, the 200 turns is fairly stable and has few real as far as handling goes. As with the 125 SX, the resistance of the WP suspension is roughly to some of the KYB-equipped bikes, but the bikes have an edge. The likes careful setup, but it can be dialed in pretty well.

Of it suits smaller riders, its 125-ish springs and damping Since the 200 engine pulls so longer in each gear, it swallows acceleration bumps than the 125. Where the 125 runs out of steam on the face of a the 200 rarely does.

And it has the extra to make the big jumps doable. As the 200 so strongly, it is fortunate the brakes are as strong as on the bigger KTMs.When KTM came out with the 360, we amazed that none of the had made a small big-bore earlier. We feel the same the 200. The vet and senior markets are big enough to support some engine sizes.

There are many riders who play at the track and never or race; the 200 is also perfect for The 200 SX will never be the bike for but for some it will clearly be the tool for the job. Opinions

I much fell in love this KTM. I have a for playing on the motocross track and a KTM 525 for off-road riding. I like the 125 for since it helps me learn control and helps my cornering I don’t race much, so the that the KTM has no class doesn’t me, and if I did race, it would be in the vet class, the 200 is perfectly legal.

I try to moto friends and family once or a week, and I got to try the KTM at two different tracks and it with my 125. The KTM has the same and fun feel of my 125, but gear and clutch control are not as critical. I was to get on the gas earlier and avoid wheelspin

The added power also clearing all of the jumps easy. the 125 sometimes goes flat, the 200 is a lot to find a gear in which the accelerates all the way off the face, so I felt a safer, too. I suppose is room for two KTMs in the family.

Tom lb/Novice Ever since I KTM was coming out with a 200cc motocross model, I’ve to try it. I have fun on 125s, but I struggle the power on technical tracks. I the 200 just might be the bike for me. spent a lot of time on four-strokes so the pipe of the 200 bothered me on my first but I never noticed it after day.

The KTM has plenty of power to me around, and it gets to the first in a hurry. I’m still a four-… guy for but the 200 is a lot of fun, and it could even be my two-… motocrosser.

Karel lb/Novice I had a great time on the 200 SX. The handled really well and I I could throw it around a 125, but at the same time it had a ton usable power than a The initial punch was really It hit really hard but not so much as to my arms off. It cornered also, and it seemed as if it would go where I wanted it.

The fork is really plush and bottomed harshly. The shock was set for me, and I felt totally confident through the deep sand and uphill whoop section at I-5 MX.
