2004 Moto Guzzi MGS-01 Corsa

Italian company Moto Guzzi specializes in creating high-quality scooters and motorcycles that also showcase elegance and athletic aesthetics that consumers would be hard pressed to find anywhere else, especially for the price. The stylish MGS-01 Corsa is no exception, exceeding people’s expectations in a sporty motorcycle model.

It is perfectly suited for a fast-paced, curve-clenching drive around the Italian countryside, and can bring a smile to even the weariest commuters heading home after work. This sporty model was built to give a spectacular drive in Northern Italy’s Adria circuit, the region around which Moto Guzzi manufactures its vehicles.

In impeccable style characteristic of Moto Guzzi’s products, the MGS-01 Corsa boasts an enormous air-cooled, shaft-driven, dual-twin cylinder engine encapsulated in an elegant and sexy frame featuring curving bodywork and a top-notch chassis that only this Italian company could successfully pull off. The MGS-01 does, after all, stand for “Moto Guzzi Sport Number One” – and indeed, that is exactly what it is, according to road test drivers who tried out prototypes of the 2004 model.

The engine is a typical, high-quality Moto Guzzi machine based on the eight-valve Daytona 1000 twin engine. It is forged with 100 mm Cosworth pistons, each clutched tightly by four radially mounted padded calipers. The displacement on the MGS-01 Corsa ranges from 992cc to 1225cc.

Moto Guzzi guarantees 122 horsepower at 8000 rpm, with a torque of 112.82 Nm at 6400 rpm. The overhauled lubrication system releases oil under the pistons for maximum longevity and durability, while the hardy twin-disc dry clutch takes care of any extra output. This superior engine system results in the smoothest drive any driver will ever feel in a sports motorcycle with this type of power.

Guzzi also bolted a V11 sport-based, six-speed gearbox to an aluminum plate, which secures the swing arm’s pivot. Such organization of the gearbox facilitates the maintenance of a tidy 1428 mm wheelbase that is nearly identical to Aprilia’s Mille motorcycles. The rear suspension, featuring a beautiful hand-welded aluminum box swing arm with Ohlins adjustable monoshocks, was used in lieu of previous models’ cantilever rear shocks.

This adjustment makes for a rising-rate linkage, leading to more flexibility when changing gears. In the front, an Ohlins 43mm adjustable USD inverted fork, complete with single shock, controls the exquisite 17-inch forged-aluminum OZ wheels. In keeping with the highest quality of safety features, Moto Guzzi also uses 320mm Brembo disc brakes.

Moto Guzzi pays special attention to the visual appeal of its vehicles, and the MSG-01 Corsa is a prime example of this attention to aesthetic details. For the bodywork, the fuel tank is seamlessly integrated into a rectangular-section steel spine frame. The frame’s shape allows fresh air to be routed to a carbon-fiber air box underneath the seat.

In road tests, drivers found only minute problems, such as a slightly pithy response from throttle-turning. The fuel injection system, built by the Italian Marelli Company, is precise and responsive without being gratuitously sensitive. Guzzi did well in building a machine that handles well, hugging curves and accelerating rapidly. Steering was noted to be particularly light and agile.

At 423 pounds of dry weight, the dual-twin track-specific MGS-01 is more than reasonably well behaved and satisfying to ride. Rife with power due to a finely tuned engine, yet easy to control with radial Brembo brakes, the Moto Guzzi MGS-01 Costa is an exhilarating and inspirational model for any driver wishing to experience the balanced amalgam of speed and controllability.
