here, we spend enough riding, working on and living old motorcycles that we often what it’s like to new motorcycles. For the Classic Experience, we give readers an inside at what it’s like to and live with old bikes.

But not time. Instead, we thought be fun to change things up a bit and share it’s like to ride and with a new, vintage-styled motorcycle, in this case the Moto Guzzi 7 Café

Our 2010 Moto Guzzi V7 Classic was delivered to the MC offices by van Dam who operates a motorcycle shipping called Van Dam Trucking (www.vandamtrucking.com ). fewer than 700 miles on the clock, it was definitely one of the newest we’ve ever sampled, and as as John got it off the truck, all of the motorcycle-riding here took it for a quick around the block.

First impressions were favorable, and we all agreed the styling of the V7 Classic works even in person than it does in The bike’s balanced proportions and distributed chrome details well with its weird/awesome Green” paint, a flat-ish hue of the green used on the original V7 in 1971.

Chrome clip-ons duplicating the original V7 Sport’s neck” handlebars) and mirrors the bike a low and purposeful look, and the café-style seat fits the perfectly. Chrome spoked and upswept mufflers enforce the classic presence. It may be a new bike, but its and retro dressing make it familiar in the best possible

Remember when 750cc was

Getting familiar with our new one of the first things we noticed was how and light the Café seemed.

many of us around here get in riding time on larger bikes, there’s a pretty collection of old-school standards in the lot on any given day, from Hall’s 1973 Yamaha to ad man Bob Legault’s 1984 Honda Nighthawk. Even so, the Café felt lighter and shorter many of them.

At roughly 450 pounds wet, the Guzzi weighs almost the as the 1973 BMW R75/5 Hall’s kicking around on recently, yet it significantly smaller. That feeling is due in part to the V7 Café lower seat height the BMW’s (31.6 inches 33.4 inches; almost 2 shorter).

Further, the shape of its gas (a … ringer for the unit on the original 1971 V7 Sport, thinner at the top and rear and wider at the with a noticeable bump-out at the combined with its low bars a forward-leaning riding position contributes to a compact, low center-of-gravity It’s decidedly old-school, and us feel right at home.

The clip-on bars mount the top triple-clamp, but their “swan upward reach puts at the perfect height for us; they’re not comfortable, they look too. Though the bars adjustable for up/down angle, are adjustable front to back. We them in their stock which we found to be quite

The seat feels cushy and at first, but doesn’t encourage saddle time; we found good for about two hours things start to go numb. some café-style bikes you have to reach back your feet to find the the ones on the V7 Café Classic are low and forward, nicely balanced to the to the handlebars.

Up and running

With a of the choke (actually an enrichner for the fuel injection) and a push of the button on the right hand the twin fires to a slow A bit of throttle helps keep it along as it warms, as the 2-valve is a bit cold-blooded even in 70-degree

Once warm, it only a light push on the shifter pulling in the low-effort clutch to first gear, and with a little throttle to bring the up to speed you’re feeding in the and pulling away. No fuss, no just a nice smooth off.

With the stock the Café makes a nice sound, but it’s a bit quiet for our As the revs rise you feel you’re starting to make noise, but truth be told, the only one that can hear of the Moto Guzzi’s mellow Though not exactly loud-pipe ourselves, we’d consider the mufflers for something just a bit especially if it would buy us a few more something we think the Moto could use.

Oh, that

True to its heritage, the Moto pushrod mill pulls up to around 7,000rpm. The tachometer has no (though we’re told it’s 7,800rpm) and as the power is broad and flat, we found routinely searching for another before then anyway. describes the Moto Guzzi as the engine provides plenty of thrust in town, getting you in and out of with aplomb. In fact, from the …-stop-style seat discourages wearing any sort of pack, we found the little Guzzi a lovely tool for and city riding and roads you rarely get above 45mph

Once out of town and free of and congestion, a quick downshift and a twist of the throttle is all it takes to up to (and past) legal It’s a perfect back …, as the combination of good relatively light weight, steering and a just-stiff-enough suspension it easy to push on your back road. The clip-on come into play which make tossing the Guz corners relatively easy, the fact the bars aren’t wide.

Though we were too to dig out a tank bag with straps, we disappointed to discover the Café’s tank won’t accept a tank bag.

The torquey works well with the gear ratios in the transmission, got smoother as the miles added up. on in our test, we found the shifting a balky between second and and fourth and fifth, but that to clear up as the miles rolled on. And the shaft final drive have any wizardry to inhibit effect, the rise/fall familiar to shaft drive machines, the V7 Classic is settled and poised, on or off.

Plus, the shaft keeps things clean at the — no chain lube flying here! — and means there’s no to worry about adjusting or

Final assessments All in all, in-town riding and daily to a 350-mile Sunday breakfast the little Moto Guzzi itself well with everything we threw at it, within

Why the qualifier? For one, it’s not a tourer, although depending on height, size and comfort with a bit of soft luggage it be fun for a weekend full of curvy It will run 80mph down the all day, but when you get stuck a semi running 70mph and you to pass him, prepare because the Guzzi is slow to steam at higher speeds.

For even though we all know the cool café’s are made for riding, we’d really to see an optional two-up saddle and foot pegs for the occasional (While we hear these are in the at Guzzi, they’re not available Also, some riders that with no fairing the started to wear on their and neck after a bit. of us, however, found the forward-leaning position let us use the breeze as a bit of a prop.

An sport windshield is available Guzzi, and though it might the café look, it could a new owner pile on highway

Minor niggling aside, we the Café’s a heck of a bike for looking for a good-looking, classic-leaning As much as we love our old bikes, admit that it’s to have one bike in the garage needs minimal maintenance and always ready to go at a moment’s

And on that level the Guzzi perfectly. All told, we put a tad over miles on our little V7 Café and during that time it failed to start, used oil, and everything worked time. Fit and finish on our test was excellent, and the bike felt assembled. We did have a grab bolt come loose, but was it in terms of actual problems.

And in of economy the Guzzi was a superstar, returning less than even when pushed and usually recording closer to

What you get, then, is a new with all the benefits that brings. You also get what we is one of the best looking bikes on the a simple, honest machine modern equipment and modern dressed with classic It’s a natural Classic MC
