Guzzi’s Big Bagger

MOTO new California 1400 is a seriously big

While 1380cc may not seem as impressive in outright capacity days – many bikes the engine’s swept volume – the dimensions and impressive styling of the new give the bike a ‘presence’ of no – and few other machines – before it.

Our but much-loved office all-rounder, a CBR1100XX, is all but dwarfed by the California, the Super Blackbird being a strong, heavy motorcycle. The is not for the faint of heart. It is for the passionate, the the rider who wants a comfortable with character and soul.

It is the Italians believe Californians ride, from their canyons to the open freeways. At $25,000 (plus on road it could be the Bargain Bagger, but it suit Australia?

Back in the late Moto Guzzi became the non-American motorcycle manufacturer to the Los Angeles Police Department bikes, winning the tender both the locals and the British.

By a consumer version, named the went on sale and became a important model for the company, alongside its sporty LeMans In latter years the California into a cruiser/tourer and with Guzzi in trouble financially, able to be updated in ways to its market share. Now, Piaggio’s money invested in RD, Guzzi has built it up and out to be a 1400, the European twin around.

the parent company of Vespa, Aprilia and Moto Guzzi in years and invested over $50 into the iconic brand, and California is one of the results. The company may new owners but the soul is still Guzzi and so are the basics of the engine – a 90-degree V-twin with a pot out each side. There’s valves feeding each and fuel injection, too.

With the crankshaft running in with the bike it makes to drive the big beast with a final drive.

Wrapped the pots is a big fat fuel tank alas, only holds 21 while the whole shebang is by a new steel chassis with (rubber) engine mounts to vibration. The classic styling can be seen in the wheel design, harks back to the spoked of old but these days the construction is in alloy. The technology continues the adoption of LED lighting, cruise a polygonal headlight, 200-section tyre, anti-theft system, ABS and control.

The technology goes even with the optional iPhone App is still in development) which your phone (or, an iPad mini, which be easier to read) into a dashboard supplying navigation, and technical data. There’s no for audio equipment, but I think better off these days that into helmets

Driving force

Cali is the best yet.

Pushing the machine along is 96hp – but importantly there’s 120Nm of available at just 2750rpm to a loping ride. Torque is very flat, with of it still available right up to the engine makes peak 6750rpm.

Fuel injection and computerised – complete with three engine maps – help emissions and fuel consumption low still providing the kind of we expect these days, and I disappointed. The California will get up and a little bit – more than I from a heavy bike less than 100hp – the acceleration being neck-snapping. In a typical Italian manner the maps are in Italian – Veloce fast, Turismo is touring and translates to rain.

You use the starter to swap ignition maps the bike idling, you can’t do it on the Yes, you can feel the difference the different engine maps, and I having a rain mode on machines, it make for a softer delivery which in turns more relaxed riding. The big are each equipped with two plugs, the fuel’s fed through throttle bodies and the injection’s Magneti Marelli.

Fuel consumption hovered 6.2L/100km but improved when I my head and wrist to touring so around town I’d expect between refuelling and 350 on the open

The grunt factor leads me to why we need six gears, but there’s a good reason I’m just to find – still, it makes for relaxed freeway cruising. the bike only had 2000km on the gear changes weren’t clunky for a Guzzi – older capacity Guzzis often awful noises when but this gearbox is vastly Top gear is an overdrive. The heel-toe was welcome, too.

The clutch is traditional Moto a single-plate dry unit with an vibration buffer. Like the of the bike it’s big and heavy, but not so. The fuel exits via a massive stainless steel exhaust.
