Pros: Nifty historical timeline of topically-focused journalism. Printed on quality paper stock.

Cons: Abbreviated content for the price. Complete lack of colour illustration between covers. Disappointingly dated.

The Bottom Line: Only interesting for the devotee of the vintage motorcycle scene.

This book comprises about 15 years worth of magazine articles collected into a single book. I use book in quotes because of the nature of the reprinted magazine articles: there is really nothing tying any of the articles together except that they deal with a particular subject [a brand and model of motorcycle] at various times during the span of the product’s development.

What *is* nice about the book is that many of the articles are from magazines that were completely unavailable Stateside during those years, except at very comprehensive newsstands that had an international slant. Accordingly, for the fan of the Le Mans [or any other bike in the Performance Portfolio series of titles] you get the opportunity to see what moto-journalists from English-speaking countries around the world were saying about the bike at the time.

Another point of interest is seeing the changing attitude toward the bike as it aged and was updated [or, in the case of the LeMans, *not* updated] over time. Basically, what started out as a superbike ahead of the competition matured into a niche road bike for the eclectic rider that was still amazingly adept despite an alarmingly neglectful lack of development on the part of the manufacturer.

What is sad is that no updates to the printing has been done in who knows how long? I’m assuming that the original compilation was done sometime in the early 90s: why else cut off the date at 1989? The Le Mans was sold into the early 90s as a new model, and the replacement for the Le Mans was the Sport 1100, inclusion of which would dovetail nicely w/ the text.

So despite being sold as a new title, the actual contents of the Performance Portfolio is nearing two decades old: this is more than the span of years it claims to cover! Accordingly, this can only be of historical interest to fans of the late-model LeMans mk V [which incidentally, never existed in factory terms: it is a shorthand created by fans of the marque to differentiate between the original mk IV Le Mans and the later special editions, which were fundamentally the same as the mk IV, but had some detail differences.]
