Guzzis in Daytona 2000. by Salms

I had been to Daytona for Week two times previous to 2000, when Tip Paul, Guzzi organizer extraordinaire, me if I would be interested in staying in a location where, hopefully, we convince other Guzzisti to and use as a base of operations. I said, remembering the places I had stayed at Daytona.

The first time I I paid through the nose to in a motel in Ormond Beach, while it was okay, placed us in the of the 95 percent or so of Daytona visitors who to idle in traffic and blip throttles at red lights. The second I did no planning and stayed at Bulow in the area, which by the third day was so from all the four-wheelers cruising that I had an unnatural urge to up all my belongings and head to the orange of California to seek work fruit.

Tip had scouted out a nice county campground near Florida. Granted, it was a bit of a ride to proper, but after a Tennessee I didn’t mind riding in 75 degree sunshine with a flock of Guzzis. Debary is Sanford, and Deland lies Debary and Daytona. Since of the events in which I was interested in Deland, it was fine with me.

when I saw the campground, I was sure I had the right choice.

Lake Park is on the north shore of Monroe, and is a well maintained but known, it seems, camping All the sites are large, and all have and water. The campsites Tip scouted out for the folk were in the back of the so we had very little traffic. A of live oaks shaded us, and palmetto plants between the gave a measure of privacy.

The gates were locked at but the campers got the key, so there was of the late-night cruising for campsites made the mini Oakie at Bulow. Joe Ortiz, our wonderful supervisor, gave us a deal on firewood, and warned us about the in the lake.

The Pittsburgh crew of Tip and Stricker were onsite I arrived, and Tip welcomed me, as he did all the new arrivals, a selection of fresh Florida At least my body would get nourishment besides hops and Later, I was to discover that Tip had his usual spread of healthy and foods, and we indeed ate very throughout the week.

I admit I did trailer to Florida year, because the weather in was awful when I left, and I had my LeMans V with the intent to it if possible. I also brought my old Triumph Tiger so I’d a ride if I did sell the Guzzi.

hardier Guzzisti did ride in, Eppa Wimbish from Virginia, Mike Reames Reno, Nevada, Roy and Suzi (Amsoil LSR sponsors) from Florida, and Catskill Hawk, a of a man, given name from upstate New York, I think he rode in from further south. Gabe and his wife, Sophe, along their sweet Keeshound, showed up also, but sadly, Gabe’s Falcone. Maybe year, Gabe?

Trickling in the course of the week were MGNOC Rep Ron Komoroski, Cliff Chuck and Darcia Stottlemyer Indy, North Carolina Rep Tenney and his pal Rob McClelland from Hill, Tip and Tommy’s giant Red Man Rising, all sour from Gras, Tip’s squeeze and others I can’t remember. loved the location.

A few Guzzisti who had at Bulow came by to visit and last seen kicking in the backside for not staying at Lake Park. Granted, Bulow has its own and it can be a world unto itself, but Carlo, as we came to call our spot of Guzzi heaven, was what the doctor (John?)

Tip immediately, well okay, that day, set up his camp and he and Tommy made us great real coffee, and delicious We did most of our dinner time away from camp, but we did one whopper of a spaghetti dinner one I was born in Florida, and for me, Florida one thing, and it’s not hanging When I am in Florida, I do seafood. We got a tip a friend of Mark Tenney’s who was a MuZ in the singles class.

The tip was about a place called the Crab Shack. It was a shack, steel and just big enough to the steamers and broilers and four harried order-takers, but the food was I placed my order for stone claws and then went to the edge to pick out a table. Did I that all the seating was outside?

you were eating, beer was We all chowed down, those the stone crabs whacking with silly little mallets, watching a beautiful fall in Florida. Looking out the inlet, you could almost the overdeveloped Hell that of Florida has become.

Daytona makes me want to clone so I can attend all the conflicting events the same day or evening 15 miles We picked one or two things to do each and, depending on who else was at the had decided to do the same thing, out to Deland or Daytona en masse and gone all day. Eppa, and Cliff always seemed to be up and by the time I got motivated. I could figure it out.

We hit the AHRMA session, which was held at the AMI on Highway 92 just west of All the beautiful vintage and not-so-vintage were being scrutinized, and we saw old friends from the Guzzi Todd Ross, Guzzi/Aprilia in Port St. Lucie, Florida, had his Guzzi racer there, and Long, new owner of Cycle in Athens, Georgia, was there tune a Ducati racer.

Cole’s beautiful green and round-head racer was there We drooled, talked, bought and took pictures in the wonderful Everyone was happy; it was planet of the

We had dinner at Otter’s, near the of Sanford marina, and enjoyed a meal with especially service. We noticed that far from the path beaten by countless pairs of genuine Davidson motorclothes boots had at one advantage: no lines! Tip knew not all Guzzisti come to Daytona for family fun, and had scouted out a biker bar just down the from the campground, the Lake Inn.

It is actually three in one, and I am proud to have all three on one evening with Tip and As if for our pleasure, a Pittsburgh bar band name escapes me was belting out ballad about union and the Monongahela River as we walked the place.

We visited Stetson University in Deland, where Jerry vintage auction and the vintage trade show and swap held. We ran into Jack MGNOC Ohio rep, and managed to find a deal on footpeg rubbers before did. He must be slipping.

Harper’s didn’t have usual huge booth and but there were plenty of goodies to fondle, and quite a few Guzzis lined up waiting for the which always begins on the Saturday afternoon of Bike and lasts late into the The super-nice man running the university allowed me to use an internet terminal to off a quick note to the Guzzi list, telling them they were missing in gray Tennessee, Wisconsin, or

We went to the Norton club’s at the track on Tuesday, I think, by MGNOC Georgia Rep Glenn of Atlanta, and had a great time, free food, but Glenn was to be seen. We learned later he had had a on his 1100 Sport and was pretty up. We missed you man!

By the end of the day, I we had as many Guzzis in the parking as Nortons. We ran into Biff and on their SP1000 sidecar and Mark Tenney and I made it in a rig cruising the paddock. So much eye-candy to look at, and so little

The Magni Guzzis were nice.

Monday night was the Guzzi pizza dinner at Pizza. It sure is great to a whole parking lot full of Just don’t forget to at Pantheon.

On Wednesday, or was it Thursday, Guzzi guy, Jim Lucia, and Jim had arranged a Guzzi ride out from Stetson University. We to Flagler Beach for lunch, via the National Forest, and for the first of the ride I was being tortured. A V at 55 mph is not a fun thing. A pair of really old Indians had come along, and the leading the ride didn’t to leave them in the dust.

Unbeknownst to the leaders (and to me) the riders found the back we were on too bumpy and had pulled We ate lunch at the Snack Jack on the and because we were lucky to arrive before the lunch crowd, our Guzzis got pride of in the parking lot. A film was shooting as we rode out, but I no idea who they were or they did with the footage.

At we decided that, since the were no longer with us, we pick up the pace a little on the half of the ride. Any cruising V-twins were fair after that, and we passed all we up behind.

We rode to Daytona, to Personal Cycle Service, sadly, very few if any, new graced the showroom. A chance at the Arai store led to a new Guzzi Stephen Lee of D.C. who took the train down. We walked downtown a bit, and then back to Camp Carlo for an around the fire.

We hooked up Louisiana’s Guzzi Dave, from Mardi Gras, and his who were camping at the track. had ridden over, but were by two motor homes for creature

One evening Mark Tenney and I to make it to the flat track and we got there just as the last started, so at least we got in free. I to go back and spend some at this event, because it was These were purpose-built bikes and they flew, out of control 75 percent of the way around the

We attended the swap meet at County Fairgrounds, and wandered and looked at the homophobic T-shirts and stickers for sale. I always something here that’s a deal, but I can’t remember it was this year. There were a couple of the roughest, corroded Guzzis for sale, but were no deal and would be only for parts, and very few ones at that.

We had planned a dinner at Julian’s in Ormond and ended up pushing several tables together and we still had sitting off to the side at another I love the 60s time capsule is Julian’s, complete general Tiki décor and an ancient player up above and behind the bar. We got great service, and the was good, and because it was Mark and Tip Paul’s birthday, we had the requisite and cake.

Little did the staff know they were spoiling our boys’ appetites for the cake girlfriend Karen had secretly After dinner at Julian’s, we the obligatory ride down Street. You have to do it once only once) during Week.

Friday evening we to the Italian bike night at Pizza, and then walked to the night across the bridge at Island. I love all Italian but how many red 996s can you look at? men stood in line to get the autographs of the factory racers, except one racer who had no one in his line. Almost out of Karen went and asked for his

As he signed a poster for her, he Do you own a Ducati? She replied no, to which he Well, then, how did you get invited? just wouldn’t happen at a function.

We didn’t stay after that.

Coming to Camp Carlo each we usually took 92 through rather than the dull The long stretch of 92 between the and Deland was our personal speed area, and, if the conditions good, we would usually the speed limit in relative In the evenings it was quite cool, and I tuck down as well as I behind the screen on the LeMans and to the 40mm Dellortos moan as the climbed up on the cam. I miss bike!

Up front the Mistral on Tip’s Centauro bellowed our flock of Geese heading

Coming home every just outside of Deland, we a gentlemen’s club called Girls that featured a extolling nine beautiful and one ugly one. Finally our got the better of us. All I can say is that they count in Florida.

I guess knows that now.

short essay can’t close to completely listing all we Like I’d tell But soon enough my week was and I split Saturday morning to myself a cushion for decompressing I got back to Knoxpatch. I am glad I because I had not one but two (count’em) flat on my trailer on the way back. Spare?

We don’t need no stinking These were almost new, made in the USA radial tires. Go figure. It wasn’t to spoil my trip, and I now indeed a spare. As I pulled out of Camp after the Cajun yell, I from Guzzi Dave and often during the course of the I told Tip and Tommy that was more fun by far than the other two I had attended combined.

Maybe can be even better, especially if I to bring socks. Roll on, 2001.
