My First Moto Guzzi. by Len L-284

I do not have much of a to tell about my first Guzzi, except to say that it was a 250cc horizontal cylinder bacon slicer flywheel and hairpin valve springs there was a small copper bleeder to lubricate the valves, but was all. It was about 60 years ago I had this bike. It was worn out but started and ran as well as could be for the condition it was in.

Even in those the frame had rear springing and the were a frictional scissors with a handle where one tighten or loosen the friction of the I always left the friction It had a right foot shift and foot brake.

The shift pattern was up for 1st and down for the gears which I was used to, owned British bikes WW II.

In 1967 I moved to New Orleans Nevada taking my 350 Bultaco me. At the 1968 Mardi Gras I saw the Guzzi dealer with a hooked up to a sidecar. I was immediately by what I thought was a very motorcycle.

I saved my money and in 1969 a V-700.

Riding this made me change habits of ten years. I was used to right shift, left foot and up for 1st, down for 2, 3, and 4. The V-700 was foot shift and down for 1st and up for 2, 3, and 4. arrangement took some used to and even after the week I was having to actually about how to shift. Finally came to a head one Sunday I went riding.

I was about three miles my house having made my way a park when I shifted 2nd gear after stopping at a sign.

The V-700 was a clunky anyway and whether I did not pull the for full release or what, I do not All I know was I came to a stop I put the bike on the stand and spent the 20 minutes working the shift to try to sort the gears out.

Working the shift many got me familiar with the spacing gears and, I never had any after that.

I rode the to one of the rallies when you (Frank) had at the first campground. That at least one dealer brought a V7 for people to ride. I did not ride one at the but I was so smitten with the styling I bought one later.

After I the campground I rode to Michigan to my brother and sister. I never it home on this trip. The exhaust pipe loosened up and an exhaust valve.

I left the bike at a Guzzi in Indiana and flew home. Two later I picked the bike up and it home. I kept the bike for a of years until I could a V7 Sport.

I rode it to Florida, to and all over with no trouble that. The drum brakes no good. I went through too stop signs for my own good.

The was with me since I was never but I was scared many times.
