Moto Guzzi 1100 Corsa and California Sport

How is it that names fade away? to even a moderately informed (petrolhead for short) and they’ll go all at the notion of a Moto Guzzi. New one is it?

enquire- about the manufacturer-not the model. Surprising to learn for them not me- that this specialist has been producing of the most spirited and evocative for the past 77 years.

Recently have been catching up the main stream manufacturers and in cases embarrassing them The California EV is an outstanding combination of civility, comfort and durability- all why the cognoscenti have voted it the GT bike around. So MG have a sportster version, with seat, no panniers and a general of all things ancillary to a street cred.

The Special is FAB! Not Cindy C reappeared in Playboy I wanted anything quite so With the standard V-twin across the frame and the dual running for a full meter and a the pearl white Cali is not for the rider, for, along the looks, their is the noise

Not only does it look a dream it rides like one as Quick to change direction in and easy to cruise two-up the country lanes. No the MG characteristics are not for (just like brunettes) but if with the programme the Cali reward at every turn.

The 1100 V-twin engine is and very flexible, allowing cruising around town and a if you explore the upper reaches of the revs on offer, all the time by a glorious cacophony of old world combined with new age instruments. the best bit comes when you to wipe off the speed.

Even two-up, running hard the traffic lights going a touch on the rear brake will bring in to play dual brake system- and no white knuckles, just a bite up front (which how almost eliminates any dive) and a level pull-up. It’s than the Honda system and extremely effectively once got the hang of it.

The result is a machine which you can around town, thrash on the road and smile throughout. As an it’s a credit to MG’s and a welcome addition to the Harley game-a model incidentally, it leaves well in its wake.

On the note, as in racer, I am currently the 1100 Sport Corsa and a beast it is. As a companion to my newly Lancia Integrale (ex-Ferrari One ace Eddie Irvine and heavily the Guzzi makes a fine

Long and low with a Red and Black scheme, the Corsa is awesome. an MG petrolhead has removed the catalyst and a pair of termignoni carbon that not only look as if should have been as part of some arms but sound like a pair Result?

Fabulous looks, great and steaming performance. Forget the that clearly red paint is a commodity in Italy, so the inside of the is left bare, that the are mounted with a black surround so that on full the bars don’t crash metal, or that without the pillion’s never enjoyed the high seating position- are all details-and this is a Italian machine not some Japanese counters science project.

So Sunday (it matters not which we ( two CBR600’s one VFR 800 and one Guzzi) set off in search of deserted country lanes on a clear day. The first I noticed was how much respect I not just from other but from the general populous the city. A good thing if safe is high on your list.

The attention was of course significantly by the accompanying field sound effects. The M11 runs of London up through beautiful countryside and into serious bike territory. Running at a 90mph, the Guzzi is comfortable and steady — as you would from a bike weighing 220KG, it is also responsive, once the engine is running at 4500-5000 revs it’s manner changes, and the power stronger and smoother.

Winding it on in fifth is a doddle and in mid-120mph velocity in a flash, a little noise bombardment, of course.

Now onto the windy tops. CBR up front, CBR behind and VFR up the rear. The Micron exhaust and 600 pops a big wheelie to signal the of play, kind of like the tossing the coin at the Wimbledon final, and we all open up with a on the gas. It’s not easy to the best out of the Guzzi- you have to at it.

Each corner pushing a hard, braking a little and accelerating a little earlier. But this cautious progress all we have the next 3-4 hours to the 1100 motor starts you in unison with the chassis and now Pirelli’s. With every comes a renewed sense of of genuinely working with the which at times feels it has a bit of the devil in it, untamed and waiting to you.

Winding down the box, I am afraid to say is still the weakest throughout the range, you match the to keep it smooth and steady, but just cos it sounds sooo good.

Out over moorland I with our quickest rider. with the 80 V-four thumping and roaring after the Guzzi, I see the whole package in action, the straight the VFR was just too slippery, but the twisty stuff, although easy to lean over and the Honda left me somehow from the action, not that, in own way, it isn’t just an motorcycle, just that, on a day for riding, the Guzzi was the best — if not the most comfortable of

The end result? Everyone agreed if we could afford ‘a then a Guzzi Sport would have to feature in it. As for my own I was sad to see it go-particularly as a very unsporting decided to reverse her car into it, it over and causing significant the while pretending not to notice, I as she fled the scene.

That I like to think that she was just a frustrated Ducati Nice thought, but I doubt it.
