2003 California EV Hey Gregg, congratulations on your purchase, it sounds an amazing find. we like pics at Squadra Guzzista so why not add some to your profile page? 😉

That EV will take you to the ends of the earth. should you need to go there. they are amazing bikes and I think you’ll find, if you keep the revs up you’ll be able to make some surprisingly rapid progress. Add to that the terrific handling characteristics of the Tonti frame and the excellent brakes and you have a package that will allow you to really have fun!

In terms of cleaning/restoring it depends how far you want to go. If you think things are really bad then perhaps a strip, powder coat and rebuild may be in order. If, on the other hand it is just minor cosmetic stuff you can use various products.

I used to just use WD40 to clean my bike, without water. It clears rust, lubes, really brings out plastic parts, leaves you an amazing shine and more importantly leaves a fine oily coating that repells water and thus prevents rust. On gear linkages/clutck/brake cable junctures etc I find a liberal application of wax based motorcycle chain lube works briliantly.

Especially the gear linkages as they are exposed.

Another excellent product is MAAS polish you can get it online. WAsh the bike, dry it, and apply the polish liberally. Buff with a soft cloth and put your shades on as the shine is unbelievable!

Once you’ve had that two day ride come back and tells us about it as I’m looking for Cali riders experiences on this page: http://www.guzzista.wetpaint.com/page/California+Dreaming

Moto Guzzi California 1100 Injection

So when I was a smidge younger I lived in Sicily for a few years, and here both with the local police and some locals having some lovely Moto Guzzi’s I said to myself that one day I would have to get one. Twirl on a few years and I have now passed my test for the last 5 years, have had a Bandit 600 and just got rid of my ER-6f, have done a couple of tours and I have finally decided that the time is here.

Now what with becoming a pipe and slippers kind of guy (only without the pipe) I’m quite interested in picking up a pre 90’s older Guzzi, and my heart tells me I’d be happy to buy a knackered old one one and turn it into a project. However, my head realising that I am lazy, not mechanically inclined, a bit of a cowboy and not very good at finishing jobs off unless they get bodged or I get annoyed and hit them with a hammer has realised that this is probably not the right way to go.

However a greater disaster looms on the horizon. While in Sicily almost 20 years ago I did pick up a local who recklessly ended up married to me, and this is the really big point that I find difficult to fathom. She believes that Guzzi’s are ugly.

Shock horror and gasps all round.

However the light at the end of the tunnel is the impending train. almost 20 years later I have sold my bike and started on this quest, doing some research and I find that, actually, I’m not sure why I thought they were pretty. Ouch.

Now all that being said I felt that I had to go find a group of experts who could help with this condition and set me back on the straight and narrow. It was a young mans dream and I fully intent to get myself a Guzzi, however I now need to find one I like. I have no particular rush or timetable, first I need to find out more, choose the style and age and what kind of condition I think I would be able to get away with without resorting to aforementioned hammer fever.
