1981 Moto Morini 3 1/2 400cc, L5 Cam, Big Valve

A very reluctant sale of my 400 which I have owned for 24 years. This is a genuine with an S stamped on the right side under the front not a conversion and was bought by me in July from Pietro Di Marino at South London (now Di Marino of West Chillington, Sussex). The bike is an honest in good all round condition; not but very tidy.

It could be buffed and polished more on the but it is sound and without any major that I am aware of. The bike was rebuilt by Benjy Straw and Smith of WeeVee when were at the New Stores, Croydon, now gone. For those who are unaware, Straw and Phil Smith London Morini specialists and a reputation for their excellent and quick bikes.

The list of carried out on this bike was as were the modifications.

The current of the bike is as follows:

· A Sport motor with an stamped on the right hand under the cylinder.

· Original and motor.

· Lightened primary gears allowing the motor to more quickly.

· Gilardoni 400cc barrels; near to obtain these days.

· and highly desirable L5 Camshaft.

· Big Valve Heads (flowed by the now George Mez of Mez Porting). These ex-racing heads from a Straw WeeVee race

· Dry clutch fitted with the thrust washer mod to cure the clutch.

· ‘Swan neck’ start.

· Dellorto 26mm 500 round-slide carbs jetted to the Valentini pipe, replacing the VHB 25mm carbs.

· Exceptionally Valentini 2-1 exhaust (from a of only 10 brought to the UK), sprayed for longevity.

· Being a ’81 ‘K’ Sport last of the genuine Sports the K2 appeared) it has the benefit of better components and stronger crankcase than earlier bikes.

· rev counter angle-drive fitted as the old one had Very expensive now.

· practical other mods out to the engine during the rebuild.

· Upgraded Japanese for reliability.

· Completely rewired.

· repaired.

· Electric start ‘K’ flywheel replaced by earlier start type.

· Electric ‘K’ type alternator side replaced by earlier ‘period’ for improved aesthetics and lighter

· Electric start dumped significantly reduces weight (a Robinson system if I ever saw

· Later series pick-up matching the transducers.

· New Fiamm YB 18L-A battery.

· NGK caps and new leads.

· Serviced new cam belt (old one available as of replacement)

· Upgrade to disc front brake set up for stopping.

In 1990, as a 350 the travelled throughout Spain, and France without as much as a clutch cable proving bike to be a good one! In it was converted to 400cc using a Ginasil cylinder and piston kit and a L5 cam fitted. The engine was also to a full rebuild costing me £778 at the time which is £1500 today, quite from this it was regularly (and repaired) coming most of the history as evidence.

Benjy closed WeeVee, Smith continued working on relocating to the adjoining unit to Italia (rear of the old Spares GB in Walpole Road, Tooting) and the continued to be regularly serviced by Phil. However, when sadly passed away, the was laid up and has been mothballed in garages until now. the recent winter, I stripped and it up in order to return it to this

Initially I was intending to complete the and keep it however I simply too many other competing and with a heavy heart decided to sell. The work out in re-commissioning the bike included coating the frame and its ancillaries, and re-coating the extremely rare 2-1 exhaust of which only a of 10 were imported to the UK by WeeVee, re-wiring the loom, replacing the which had died in storage, a higher specification (and reliable) Japanese regulator with new cables where battery and a myriad of stainless fixings and other minor

So what is it like to The engine is nice and quiet well and it reaches 100mph Under power it has a fantastic from the Valentini.

It has hugely mid-range power over a 350 because of those big pistons and does 105mph plus given enough space to get unleashed. The bigger bores an enormous transforming effect on the performance which is where riding takes place all. Hence the bike well out of turns under and it will definitely give of the 501s around a run for their

The work done to the primaries the motor to spin and this is consequently able to rev. It is fantastic posing bike and turns heads either on the or when parked up. The brakes are enough to bring it back to more sedate speeds and i ts handling is typical Morini;

T he bike has just been serviced as part of the MOT preparation it passed with no advisories and such as cables being or lubed, the oil changed, tappets and adjusted, timing checked and a new cambelt fitted.

Bad Stuff

Minor issues include a of brake fluid from a caliper seal to the left stanchion lifting some at the bottom of the left hand Really annoying but now fixed. A of non-matching K N style air filters are (does not seem to affect whatsoever).

The seat would from being recovered become discoloured during its in storage, however this is being picky as it is perfectly as it is. I t is wearing a ‘temporary’ speedo from a friend as the original missing in storage and unfortunately I it now lost. This will be before the sale completes so the reading is obviously not entirely

Other issues revolve the rare and hard to find like badges, clocks which have tarnished or through use. Please that this bike is 32 old and as such it will still, the restoration, not be entirely immaculate.

is an exceptionally rare opportunity to buy a slice of Moto Morini and is a fantastic bike that cost thousands more to today. However it has been in for far too long and now it really deserves to be out on the road. Consequently it is for sale a reasonable starting price and a reserve.

It will be advertised and as usual, I reserve the right to end the at any time. I intend to let it run to the end of the auction
