MZ SM 125

Little motards aren’t for 16 year olds.

Little aren’t just for 16 year

Inspired by MO’s entertaining and hack take on the 2002 955i, I’ve decided to my experiences with another that gets forgotten in the of KawiYamaHonZuki.

No liter bikes nosireebob, just little Motards. The MZ 125-SM to be exact. every one expounds, and rightly so, the of buying a used bike but with a little smart dealer leftovers can be just as a deal. Witness Sean’s of a D955i.

So here’s my experience my first bike, and riding miles in my first five of ownership.

So, I’m not really the bike type, and cruisers are all too big and and boring (except in a straight for my taste. This pretty leaves the ever dwindling of standards which seem to be … sportbikes now and dual-sports mostly seem to cost too new and have rabid owners don’t sell them they’re loooooooong past prime. Sport Tourers, (eek!).

Thus my search Being a cautious 26 year old by nature, and knowing how to ride Ace 100 in my teens, and a short stint on an awfull Puch 250. ) but not a speed freak I figured shoot small. 500cc or

The market is full of Ninja some bad, some ok, over-priced, hell a new 250 Ninja is cheap, but I’m not looking for a sport bike with suspension and a thousand clones all the road. The used market for here in Vermont is pretty and despite checking the classifieds sunday through the spring of and cruising for road-side bargains I was with pre-historic standards in of restoration, GoldWings with a billion miles, the odd Harley and of 2-… dirt bikes.

In my search for small displacement that were road a Friend who has a ’97 Scorpion suggested I check out MZs in general, and the in particular. Well, cycletrader, ebay hmm. No-one’s the things.

As it happens there are two MZ in Vermont, both sell the MZ scooters and 4-wheelers as an accessory to RV business. One of them had a 2002 in black.

Well, it’s little. in but full-size in the frame department. cute, and it’s built with a capitol G. The guys at the were willing to deal, wanted it out, as they had a new of 4-wheelers, still in the crates, to go in the showroom. To my surprise they me a test-ride, and immediately knocked the down to $2800 (from the of $3295).

I came back the week with a freshly motorcycle permit (hadn’t yet to take the certification test and get the M on my and a new helmet (Ok, I actualy out and bought a new helmet for a test I knew I was in trouble.) They had it up and had the tank full. The shiny paint glistening like in the early June sun, the pipe and alloy spokes not like chrome, but like water flowing over

Damn, thats a good little bike. I think I have bought it right but a test ride was still in the

Oh c’mon! you’ll say, a 125! Well, yeah, it is a It also weighs 285Lbs wet, looks like a european … would in a James Bond movie, less than a nice mower, and has the appeal of dual-sport-ability.

Oh yeah, did I mention it has a two-year milage waranty and is built in With exactly 23 kilometers on the odometer, the little 125 popped life with a cold-blooded and proceeded to wheeze its way to a stable Hmm. But once it warmed up the engine sounded like a watch. The smooth woosh of chain, precise, quiet of little valves, and the quiet of straight-cut gears.

Hey, a 125, they need to all the power from it they It whispered of reliability and a level of finess not commonly found in of this small displacement. The issueing from the stainless, tail pipe smelled a dryer vent, warm and

Whew, what a change the smokey-smelly 2-… hell of old Puch.

No tach, but a full of warning lights, and an easy to relatively accurate speedometer slick black-on-white in the day green-and-red-on-black at lighting. The switch gear is and comes straight off the Baghira which costs twice as It has large, stable mirrors, a comfortable seat, a comfortable, seating position that’s close enough and just enough for 5’8 me.

I think I might have drooling a little.

On to the ride. Are refined and comfortably sporty you can use to describe a motorcycle displacing and costing less than 2-… MX-ers? They are if describing the MZ. Rev it up and the little 125 pulls up to ignition shut-off at 10500 oops, it IS geared awfully

Still the little bike up to 65 without complaint. The cable clutch is smooth and positive, the is a little notchy but also positive and short. The suspension is but not squishy, pot-holes dissapear the Marzocchi forks and Paoli without pounding rear or Well damped, and hard to it takes mid corner bumps a champ and although it dives hard under panic I’ve yet to bottom it, even

I bought it.

It’s comfortable, looking, and built like a I rode this little for 2000 miles without I used it to pass my motorcycle reveled in the 90 MPG fuel economy, and got every where I stopped whats that? Then the inevitable: a problem.

One morning the starter motor but the engine wasn’t turning I called the dealer, hey it’s a new and under waranty! Turns out the uses a one-way bearing and it had

The part was over-nighted to the dealer, fixed it the same day I brought it in, and charge me for the oil change. Thats why I a new bike.

After fifteen miles more of drafting and getting up to 80mph on the highway, to everyone I met that yes, it is only a 125, and ripping after sportbikes on twisty roads, and generally enjoying the out of myself I reluctantly put it away for the

Never taxing, despite the to shift often, containing parts, able to crawl and off-road well beyond the tire’s ability, and showing but competance well beyond its point, I’m commuting and for fun again this spring a grinning fool. With an headlight, … brakes, and a smooth counter-balanced engine not even sure I feel the to upgrade to a bigger bike

First time riders, and looking for a cheap second take notice. This little MZ is fun, reliable and and a bargain. Costing just a more than a good and offering a real motorcycle this little motard just for European 16 year

Good luck finding one though, if everyone has the same for their MZs I do, they won’t be
