First Ride — RZR

John Arens and Pete

Loyalty and old rivalries … and one the fiercest and most long rivalries in motorsports began one guy figuratively kicked snow in the guys face. Those old have expanded far from the north all the way to the sweltering desert and Polaris, Can-Am, and Arctic Cat go with each other on type of terrain.

Whether ATVs, sleds, or Side x as one company releases a new model you can bet the guys will up the ante one of their own. In the Side x world Arctic Cat was the first to high end performance with Prowler 1000. Last Can-Am countered with the Commander 1000, and now Polaris is down the gauntlet with all new RZR XP900 and we were lucky to spend a day thrashing it in the desert.

XP Engine Features

The Polaris RZR is a Side x Side like no Visually it’s got the looks of a RZR on but that’s where the similarity Polaris wanted to give the new RZR XP the styling as other members of the RZR and most of the bodywork is the same the exception of the long skirt partially hides the lower members and long travel

Make no mistake however, a 900cc engine and long suspension it’s the only the XP900 wears or hides It’s really the suspension and that makes the RZR XP900 special.

Polaris could jammed the existing 850XP in a new chassis and been competitive, but than do half the job they decided to go through the tremendous (Three YEARS in the making!) and to bring out a new engine to match the The new engine is called the ProStar 900 and actually an 875cc, liquid DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder, cylinder engine fed by Electronic Injection.

Rather than pirate a from the ATV or sled line the new is designed specifically for the rigors and of a high performance Side x A 750 watt charging system is to power plenty of accessories, but more important is the new transmission.

The engine uses a CVT transmission Park, Reverse, Neutral, and High, but it’s the design of the that matters most. and drive shaft angle rob power and rather than power away engineers the shaft drive system to all unnecessary shaft direction The result is better efficiency, power to the rear wheels and a transmission.

The CVT also features a performance clutch similar to top of the snowmobiles with a roller unit, and the strongest belt has ever used in any product. We especially happy to find the CVT is easy to remove just the left rear tire.

above the left rear is a unique air intake system to duct clean air efficiently the dual throttle bodies, and a plenum holds a large of filtered air at the ready for when you the throttle. Think of the air plenum as on reserve” or warp drive if you to be a Trekkie! (Or Klingon, Vulcan, or any other as yet unidentified intelligent Thankfully the intake tract has a diameter tube with few and overall distance to the throttle is relatively short which all up to instant throttle response.

A automotive style filter a large total surface should provide excellent for all day rides in the dustiest conditions. Up the radiator cooling capacity has improved as well. Rather stuffing in a larger heat core, cooling ability was by carefully ducting airflow the bodywork and away from the

Polaris claims a maximum 88 hp, 73 and 29% better acceleration than else, but whatever the final are, the new ProStar 900 has got it where it

Maintenance items are a big factor for us, and the oil couldn’t be much easier you can talk your nephew the job. The common Polaris oil is behind a small panel between the seat backs, the plug is easy to get to, and there is no to ignore the task when this easy.

Desert Suspension

The dream of every racer is long travel and excellent ground clearance but always been a custom creation. The new XP900 comes it right from the factory. At the are a set of long dual A-arms 13.5 inches of wheel but at the rear is where the real magic begins. Rather a dual A-arm Independent Suspension, Polaris gave the new RZR a rear end like no other.

desert racers have used a trailing arm type for maximum rear wheel with minimum geometry through the shock …. The 3 link trailing arm system the same way and offers an awesome 14 of wheel travel. Rather rubber or plastic bushings gave the XP900 spherical rod ends at all rear suspension and at both the front and rear are quality Fox Podium X 2.0 piggyback shocks.

Total width of the wide suspension is now 64 inches. the vital components is a solid, yet quarter inch thick skid plate, and main members are high strength tubes. One trick Polaris did with the super stable and RZR4 is that extra smoothes out the ride. Thankfully the new wheelbase has been stretched 4.4 longer than the RZR-S increases stability and helps the power from the engine.

Performance is only a throttle of your right foot and we were also extremely to have the 4 wheel disc which work excellent! As the RZR-S, cast aluminum with ITP XCT 900 tires get the power to the at least when they’re touching it!

Thrillville Central

If driven any Polaris RZR you’ll be at home on the new XP900. Control is pretty much identical, and as the other RZR family members the new is behind the driver / passenger The advantage of a rearward engine is a lower seat and lower of gravity.

A sturdy tube structure protects the occupants, 3 seat belts hold you in and side nets keep inside just in case the happens. Finally, the extra fender flares help any of the tire thrown debris off the and passenger. For thrilling night LED lights (another Polaris project a bright beam far the darkness.

First Ride The XP Express

Like just everybody else we know, we wait to hop inside the new RZR XP900, ourselves down, and point it at The Arizona desert seemed the place to do that!

Getting the newest RZR is easy enough, and we settled into the seat and the belt into place. the interior on all RZR models is a little cramped than some brands we do like the lower position which helps handling. The steering wheel swivels down to where most comfortable for you, a digital/analog gauge package is in the center of the dash, and a shift is found between the seats.

ahead of the passenger is a rubber hand hold, and they’ll be it very shortly. We also appreciate the new sealed glove box in the At this point you could be any of the RZR models but that all changes a twist of the key.

The new XP900 engine springs to with a throaty growl, the familiar thumping of a large 4 … at idle. We revved the several times to check the rpms on the digital gauge, the temperature climb, and felt for At idle there is a noticeable of the steering wheel and a few other but as the rpms climb the vibrations decrease.

While underway any is undetectable. We snicked the gear into High and headed canyons and cactus.

Immediately we the tighter, more responsive of the XP900. We liked the tighter ratio! After rolling short whoops and winding a few corners we found ourselves at the of a sand wash and it was time to see the XP900 could do.

We stabbed at the and the engine answered our challenge an instant burst of power pushes one back into the We LOVE the sound! Within we were sweeping down the like a burst dam, flying in every direction as the clawed at the loose gravel and rocks behind like we being shot at and the tires returning fire.

While the horsepower is on par with other big numbers, the RZR XP900 accelerates and quicker thanks to its lighter weight. The transmission shifts clutching was very good under power and even back shifting, with no lag. The big engine does quite a bit of engine braking the throttle is still partially on, but when your foot is

The wide, fast washes excellent grounds to test and how quickly it gets up to speed, but the braking system. Thankfully the 4 braking system works well and quickly scrubs off with no suspension flutter or like some competing

Climbing out of the washes we found of every type, and long sections which would the suspension. We dove into the unevenly spaced whoops and at the throttle. The XP900 engine has snap to lift the front end or at lighten it over the whoops or obstacles, and the rear suspension of the RZR works excellent!

Both take big hits with no although the front can be a little in short, choppy sections. not complaining, but it’s our job to let you know! The end is fantastic everywhere, and is extremely to driver/engine input. When hard it doesn’t try to step out on you and to transfer the weight rearward, dig in, and you forward.

Overall weight front to back seems good as well. We also the tires which seem to be a choice for all but the most serious lovers. Overall performance is

The Little Stuff

The expression is sweat the little stuff” but our job to consider the “little stuff” can often add up to a big problem. We didn’t any big problems with the RZR XP900, but are things to consider.

One thing we possibly change with the is the throttle throw. The throttle makes the engine reach throttle quickly, but then it a much longer throw to full rpms. Polaris certainly did this to help reach a comfortable average and it’s probably a good for many, but experienced drivers may a more linear response.

We also found the air intake right behind the drivers to be a little annoying at lower but we quickly got over it at higher

One thing we noticed in the first section is the steering wheel can be a “flexy”. This probably reduce impacts to your but it can be a little disconcerting on a 90 hp, high vehicle, and it leads us to another

There comes a point all high performance vehicles ATV, UTV, aircraft, or rockets called diminishing Basically it means increased demands other part be beefed up as well, which in then reduces overall and the cycle continues.

The RZR XP900 the point where future with higher horsepower most likely require to be strengthened, roll cages stronger, deep, wrap-around to contain and isolate the occupants, 4 restraints added, etc. gladly take it just the way it however.

Polaris has answered the challenge of their standing rivals. The new RZR XP900 is a rocket! We knew they sit still for long, but we had wondered what their move be.

Now that the world has their the question is what’s next?
