Ride Report — The Sportsman 500 H.O.

John Arens

If is one machine that defines the hardworking and hard playing ATV, it is the Polaris Sportsman They’re practically mandatory at hunting camp in the country, and on every trail regardless of it’s a Louisiana swamp run or a into the snow covered of Idaho. Along the way, became the best-selling ATV ever

Nearly all were abused if not on a regular basis, with owners completely ignoring any maintenance; yet the Sportsman was always for more. We’ve seen pull a fully loaded hay one day and then head out for a recreational ride the next, with the knowing he could count on his for both. It’s time to another look at the machine made Polaris an ATV powerhouse.

Engine Details

It may be the XP models get all the glory in the Polaris lineup days, but before the XPs, the ATVs were king. Polaris introduced the XP models, than discontinue the old model, kept the original Sportsman in the and today it’s called the 500 H.O.

The heart of the Sportsman 500 is a single cylinder, 498cc, cooled engine fed by a 40mm carburetor. Although electronic injection has become standard on much all new ATV designs, it certainly engine management complexity and cost.

Mated to the engine is a CVT system calls PVT, but whatever you it, the carefree CVT system requires no and is a very welcome feature for new or experienced riders, or for those looking for convenience in their Polaris was a pioneer with CVT ATVs having introduced while everyone else was relying on a foot shifter. to their extensive experience CVT systems on their snowmobile they pretty much it and the CVT became the industry standard for ATV transmissions.

Polaris wanted to the Sportsman easy to operate, and the CVT was a huge step in that but the creature comforts didn’t there. The Sportsman 500 H.O. a center mounted, digital pod that tells a rider they need to know fuel level, gearing, RPM, and even maintenance

The pod also has a simple choke to help with starting on mornings, and once running the really never needs to their hands off the bars. We love to see Polaris ditch the thumb throttle assembly for the unit found on the XP models To get rolling, all you need to do is select forward (high or low) or with the right hand gear selection lever, it where you want to go, and you’ll be on way.

If the trail gets a little slippery, or rocky, simply hit the mounted 4wd switch and the front will kick into and pull you along when it wheel slip, and then back to 2wd when no longer It’s not going to get much

Suspension on the Sportsman 500 H.O. falls back on a Polaris At the front are a pair of McPherson while at the back is a shaft Independent Rear suspension – another Polaris first has become an industry standard! clearance is a very respectable inches, but the best feature is the

The Sportsman ATVs were some of the smoothest on the trail, and design still delivers a smoother than just everything else other its stable mate, the XP models. brakes are found at both to get everything stopped, and there is a mounted lever along a foot lever, but we have wanted a second handlebar lever as well. About the drawback with the chassis is the high overall weight, and the 500 comes in at a portly 696 lbs.

With every we test, we are always concerned regular maintenance. The easier maintenance is, the more likely it get done. Thankfully on the Polaris unlike some competing those items are still performed. The air box is easily accessible the seat, and the filter even a nylon, water repellent which helps it stay clean and dry, as does the air intake location.

One of the handiest maintenance features is both the dipstick and oil filter are accessible with no extra to get in the way or to remove first.

Updated – Plenty of Storage

Rather stick with the old bodywork Polaris gave the 2012 500 new bodywork that matches its XP That’ a great thing! The seat is both comfortable and enough for all day rides, and overall is roomy yet not so big that it feels

Down below, your ride on integrated foot and floorboards – another Polaris – and they generally do a good but sometimes we wish the pegs slightly more aggressive or When they pack up snow or mud, they can get a slippery. Most of the time, drain water away but we did notice a couple times would splash through the compartment onto the opposite

We’ll take it though.

One where Polaris has always a HUGE advantage is with and the Sportsman 500 H.O. does not Behind the seat is an enormous compartment, but under the front is one practically big enough for your We can’t say too much about the hood storage area! water resistant, it holds a TON of and we LOVE IT! The best part is, standard on the 500 H.O. and it’s an on the XP models.

Thankfully, Polaris was able to it even though they the radiator for better protection. to its Sportsman name, the 500 H.O. is for venturing deep into the and is equipped to carry and store supplies to survive a very time. If you can’t get it inside the compartments, you can easily tie it down on the racks.

If that still enough, Polaris also accessory boxes that securely to the front or rear For towing any load, the Sportsman 500 also features a receiver hitch.

The Ride

One of the most features to buyers of any ATV is overall and power delivery. While the 500 H.O. isn’t going to the hard hit of a 700cc or 800cc it does have plenty on and delivery is smooth and manageable. Hit the and you can conquer almost anything on the trail or the way to the duck blind, and got enough to get almost any job done.

For most riders, it will be

While power delivery a factor in overall ride suspension action is equally and the Sportsman 500 offers a very ride. In fact, the suspension is so that we believe that a firmer dampening spec the factory would work in more aggressive conditions, and take most of the suspension off the springs. Most riders be very happy with the just as it comes from the though.

We especially like the Polaris tires. They’re overall performers and if the trail or gets muddy, the open pattern digs in to pull you On the hard trails, they very well with handling, and since the compound is a softer, they are even to grab a solid grip in the

However, since the compound is softer for better traction, you probably notice a little wear on the edges, but we’ll take the extra traction. One we found curious though was 4wd while in reverse. When in it seems 4wd is disengaged, and the only way to it active is by holding the override

We usually don’t want to be with an override button we’re trying to keep getting hopelessly stuck.

500 H.O. 2012

The Sportsman 500 is a very, very good ATV by any We have yet to find something it was for that it couldn’t do, and just most Sportsman owners, it go to work all week and be ready to all weekend. While there may be a few competing models that excel in one area or another, the 500 H.O. delivers a comfortable in an easy to handle and easy to package at a very attractive

It’s the working man’s ATV and it not let you down.
