Oft debated: The ‘real’ bullet in Royal Enfield’s line-up.

It’s another random day and good enough for a new discussion on an always on-going topic. It’s the question that everyone from the experienced bulleteer to the noob has an opinion to … ‘ Which is/was the ‘real’ Bullet ?’

“Standard!” I hear an old-schooler say.

CI vs. UCE.

Thump vs. ‘Thump’.

Right-side gears vs. Left-side gears.

Men vs. Boys.

Legacy vs. Consumerism.

Exclusivity vs. Commonplace.

Tradition vs. New-Age.

And just as we get to the point of being half riders and half mechanics with balls of steel, the road gets a U-turn.

“Bullet is for men, plastic is for boys.”

“Dug, dug, dug.”

“If you ask mileage, you don’t deserve a bullet.”

“Dug, dug, dug.”

“Have you seen that terrible looking exhaust?”

“Dug, dug, dug.”

“I love my bullet, but I miss that sound. Can you please advise which exhaust gives me the Thump?”

“Dug, dug, dug.”

And as oil continues to leak without reason, we ask the question, “What do you mean by a ‘real’ REAL REEEEAAAALLLLLLL bullet?”

Is it defined by being a 200 kg bike?

Or a non-plastic fairing bike?

Or something still Indian and not yet another invasion of a Ch*n*se copy? Just kidding.

Or one that has THE thump?

Or one that boasts torque over horsepower?

Or is it the vibrations?

Or the ‘love’ required i.e. maintenance?

Or is it the attention you get?

Here are a few answers for a lot of unnecessary questions asked and unasked. Pick the one that fits like a glove or find your own …

The truth is that time doesn’t stand still. Adaptation is necessary for survival. Values change. Legacies are difficult to maintain. Fads are temporary. Safety is paramount. Rear disc brakes, LED lights, digital display, EFI are just steps in the evolution of technology. Everything will not be hand-made or hand-painted forever. Mass-scale commerce is required for profit-making and the continuity of the manufacturer. The customer-service will not remain same, whichever direction it chooses.

The customer’s choices will only increase. What you loved yesterday, you still love today. But you may also love something else, something more tomorrow.

The definition, just like the desire, of a ‘real’ bullet is in the mind of the consumer. There may be a lot of different directions, but you choose to journey on a similar steed. So KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and makeup and tell me,

Why cannot a ‘real’ bullet simply be any motorcycle of all models that are manufactured by Royal Enfield?

P.S. This in purely intended to be a fun post, but please feel free to comment generally and technically. Types of riders, characterisation of bikes mentioned in the post is imaginative with just a subtle hint of general public opinion.
