The Other Teal Terror: Enfield C5

Andy and I have a lot in a passion for small cars, a of good wine and beer, and who, as first generation don’t always get their right. What else? We own tiny machines in slightly than masculine colors are a little underpowered and way more fun you might expect.

This is my ride, a 2010 Royal C5. I’ve got about 9,000 on it so far and it has certainly been an experience.

Royal Enfield has a long and history. Founded in 1893 in England making bicycles, then moned on to making They made their motorcycle around 1911 They made them for a few took a few years off, started again around and haven’t stopped making since. That’s over one years of continuous production.

In the mid they were sending so bikes to India for the police and that they set up an assembly there so the bikes could be partially disassembled. By the mid sixties, bikes and the Harley Davidson (yes, it really used to be a bike) had sounded the … of the British sporting motorcycle and the Redditch plant closed sending all their equipment to where they spun up production.

The little bikes were and hearty for their time. had technical innovations like the swingarm suspension used on a motorcycle. They did well in and trials in the hands of privateers, was never a factory funded

Spin forward a few decades and is still making the same the Royal Enfield Bullet. And I the same bike. There only very minor made for nearly fifty

You could buy a brand new Royal and legally race it in vintage it had changed that little. You bolt brand new parts on to a fifties bike.

What was of the art in the mid fifties was now showing its age. The had a top speed of around 60mph on a day and any significant time spent was tempting an engine seizure the anemic oil pump. It still had 6V points ignition, drum front and rear, and was kick-start

It was not terribly reliable by modern and the emissions left a lot to be desired.

2005 they created the AVL or Lean Burn engine. It the iron cylinder with an one and raised the compression from to 8.5:1. Emissions were and 12V electrics became standard, as did start.

The AVL didn’t last long. It was way too dirty to meet emissions in international markets. In 2009 introduced the UCE or Unit Construction While the AVL had been a makeover was a fresh start.

The new bike had ignition, electronic fuel hydraulic lifters, a hydraulic disc brake, and unit Previously, the engine and transmission had lubrication. With the UCE the engine and shared a single oil supply.

The New

While totally fresh was a huge premium placed on The engine still has a primary to transfer power from the to the transmission instead of the more gear drive used in bikes today. It gives the the characteristic short, upright of a true British bike.

have an undersquare 84/90mm to get the great low end torque and distinctive thump that aficionados in the original. While the front end now has a brake it is on the left hand so when the bike is parked on the stand and leaned over it nicely away and isn’t too Top speed is now about 80mph solid oil pressure.

The bikes are still hand and one look at the frame will it. These are obviously not the perfect welds of a superbike. Lumpy but and obviously done by hand.

and dollies are still used on the line. Several models get painted pinstripes as well.

are several models to choose The G5 is closest to the quintessential mid sixties single cylinder with gaiters and a bench seat. The C5 the classic lines of the fifties a single seat and fender front and rear. Both of models are available in Deluxe with more chrome and a chrome and painted tank. The B5 is the T. It is a little less expensive and on the older Bullet 350 frame a more square fender the G5.

It only comes in black. there are the military variants, C5s in flat olive drab or sand colored paint. The domestic market also some 350cc models.

As one I know stated, They everything they needed to and they didn’t. The bike is modernized but looks like it through a time warp to get The ride is distinctly vintage. It a good bit when revved and the is solid but not state of the art.

That said, it is blast to This is no super smooth four riding appliance. It you back to the day when men were men and made noise.

While it ride along on the freeway at it’s more at home and fun on back country or winding roads.

My Experience

Some affectations are notably absent. I yet to see an oil puddle on my garage floor. The quality and overall reliability is higher than the older but being hand made not quite up to Japanese standards

Still, most problems are and easily sorted. Classic Works, the U.S importer, stands their product with a two unlimited mileage warranty. a frequent visitor to their open forums I’ve first hand the effort put into getting problems

The owner of the company posts on the forums. And the factory in Chennai, is in regular contact with him feedback.

While it’s got about 20hp at the rear it’s surprisingly capable. The you see at the top is of my bike at the Golden Gate in San Francisco, CA. I live in Portland, OR.

I made that round about 1,600 miles on that bike and the only I had was the speedo cable coming at one point. I didn’t burn the freeway the whole way, I took the back roads. My complaint was that the seat use some improvement.

The Next

The company is planning some big They have been at a very rapid rate the last few years. They are in the of setting up a new, larger to keep up with demand.

this qualifies as a small here in the U.S. this is the engined motorcycle made in As in most of Asia, the majority of made are smaller and made for transportation. Royal Enfield is promoting pleasure riding as an for a country coming into prosperity. Also, there is a twin engine in development. It be a twin and air cooled but not many details have been

They have admitted there is still a hot debate the company as to whether it should be a or v-twin.

In Conclusion.

Is this a bike for Not at all. If you want gobs of and torque on tap look elsewhere. If you your bike to run like a watch with just maintenance, pick something If you spend most of your at 65mph or more, well, probably be happier with meant to do that and the RE isn’t.

But if you a singularly unique motorcycling if you want every ride to like you just stepped in time fifty years, and if you mind talking to a gray guy and listening to him wax poetic about his old every time you park, might be the bike for you. Oh, and guys will never you when you say the bike is only a old.
