Day 4 Dakar Rally 2014: Pedro takes the stage win for Sherco!

Day four of Dakar Rally 2014 started from San Juan till Chilecito, Argentina, the distance of the stage was 563 kilometre including 353 kilometre of timed Special Stage. The fourth day winner was  Juan Pedrero Garcia from factory Samsung Sherco 450 SR. Though not in the top 10 overall Garcia managed to get his second stage win in Dakar.

He  was followed  by KTM’s Chaleco Lopez in second place who has moved up overall and now sits third overall. Third place in stage four was taken by KTM’s pilot Marc Coma who is now second overall with a little over three minutes behind the leader. Team Honda’s pilot Joan Barreda still continues to be the overall leader, however his advantage was cut down greatly as he finished sixth in Stage four.

As for Despres the defending champion, he was happy after the stage 3 by his performance. However this was not the case for stage 4 as it turned out to be disastrous for five-times Dakar Rally winner. He was just 9 km from the finish line, and was likely to take the outright lead in the process, encountered an electrical short, which caused the race bike to stop working and made a delay of 40 minutes in time for him and now he is overall 41 minutes behind Dakar leader Joan Barreda but this is just the 4th stage out of 13 stages, still there is a long way ahead and tables can be turned around anytime.

Keeping the morale high “Yesterday went great, it was one of the most beautiful specials I’ve ever done,” Despres said. “Our strategy called for taking Michael Metge’s wheel this morning because it was in better condition. Everything went well until km 170, but then we started to make small navigation mistakes, but we managed to stay on top of things with Marc [Coma]. We were both there with 150 km to go, but nine km before the end, my Iritrack support broke down and damaged the wires.

The motorcycle ground to a halt and I worked hard until I found the problem: a short-circuit. Do I look disheartened? Well, I’m not. We’ve just finished stage 4 out of 13.

The day I give up is the day I should pack up and go home. True, it’s a big setback, but I love this race, and I know it’s not over until it’s over. I could have given up today, but I’m still here. The motorcycle doesn’t miss a beat, and I’m in tip-top shape.”

Red Bull KTM’s pilot Marc Coma who from the beginning was on attack mode led the way at each Check Point although it didn’t help him to get his twelfth Dakar stage win  but the ride allowed him to get back a lot of time.

Coma said: “It was an excruciating stage. Yesterday was already tough, and today it was more of the same. The rain over the last few days meant you couldn’t see the tracks at all. Actually, that wasn’t what made today’s stage difficult, rather, it was the ease with which people made mistakes. We found the right way and I was able to push hard towards the end.

It’s a very long rally. We knew the first week would be grueling. You have to be consistent and take it one stage at a time. Cyril? You can never discount him. He’s won this race five times. He knows what it’s about. Anything can happen in this race.”
