The Suzuki GR650 (known as a Tempter” in the US) is a bit of an oddity. It’s a competent bike with innovative (for the early features.

But this bike sell well. Part of the for this was that it was released at a when big 4‘s were coming their own. In the early apparently a parallel twin just wasn’t that at least that’s what the production run of 1983 – 1984 (in the US) suggest.

 It’s a shame because the short-comings (and a slightly stance) belies its competence … and a joy to ride.

One innovation was the two-stage fly offering low down torque and revving above 3000rpm. It was Suzuki’s first production with mono-shock, “Full rear suspension. This it very comfortable and was aided by 5 settings… just the thing for the ladies on the boulevard.

Suzuki want the Full Floater to and went about engineering serious structural steel to sure. This heavy plays its part in the GR’s (for a parallel twin) dry weight. Besides making the GR a smooth operator on the road the also makes it a candidate for the LAMS (Leaner Approved Scheme) which is based on a to weight ratio.

This was one of the considerations when we in search for a bike for our client V. Cameron works in the fashion and has a keen eye for style. He had some ideas on colour and form but requiring a LAMS bike a retro feel that dual seat capabilities, had no brief for this build… reason (ie. budget), the choice was up to us.

We looked at a few options but bang for it was hard to pass on a black sporting a GSX-R sticker. (It had recently had all the electrics re-done… a weak point on a GR)

We find have their own opinion what they could be or to be. You can beat them into cut and cajole a look out of them but if you let them have their say you can end up a Homer car. Thankfully saw the sense in this and what seemed to sit well with 80’s star.

We dealt with the dual requirement by hiding the support for the seat under the re-positioned guard and employed a removable This fulfilled the brief and the look of a single seater. The required some work so it was out the motor was given a once however (thanks to Mr Suzuki), it was in good shape so only the necessary gaskets for reassembly.

New headlight, indicators, gauges and were part of the shopping with much bracketeering, a seat, the aforementioned rear-end lots of powder-coating, polishing and an painted tank have this ageing forgotten one a new on life. It’s not a fast bike but for torquey cruising the GR650 is the ticket.
