The Sprue Lagoon

1/24 Suzuki Gemma 50

You know you it. This is the free bonus the Skyline 2000RS four-door: the 50 scooter!

“Free toy inside! toy inside!” So exclaims Stanley  on the set of his children’s show as he digs through a box of cereal, desperate to the (doubtlessly cheap and useless) secreted at the bottom of the box. most of the box of whatever-it-is cascading around him, Stanely at the camera (and his audience of and admonishes them “Don’t your parents you do this!”.

is one of the scenes in the old cult-favourite Weird Al movie UHF. (If you haven’t it, go do  so. You will laugh.) does that have to do a Tamiya scooter model? Stanely’s words of wisdom cereal-box toys should home with most, if not all of us. we not, at some point, enticed to buy something more for the bonus” than for the article

I know I have.

A perfect is the Tamiya 1/24 Skyline I didn’t know or care about the 1981 iteration of car, and was only half-way because it was the only 4-door I’d ever seen from era. However, on the box it proudly that in addition to the kit of this pedestrian automobile you ALSO a bonus 1/24 Suzuki 50 scooter kit! That was for me. You’re telling me I get a weird-ish car AND  a

Pretty cute for a kit, don’t you think? The 50 actually requires more than the Skyline!

The Gemma is not an kit. it has two halves, two wheels, a a licence plate and handlbars. It has a full set of decals (!) for the badges and Thus, while minimalistic, it is a kit, worthy of all the attention one pay to a larger, more impressive

The kit fits together fairly given its age, but you have to be it’s a lot easier to work on thing if you can find a way to put the rear-wheel in you paint everything. I cut off the axle tab and some sheet styrene up the fender to act as a positioning block. when I was done, all I had to do was slide the into place against the and glue it in.

This saved a lot of masking and down the road.

Here you can see of the engine detail. While it can be made to look like pieces by using metallic and washes.

Painting and Finishing:

to the instructions, the Gemma came in a few I chose blue, but couldn’t a very good photo However, the box showed it in a fairly blue, so I chose Model Acryic’s GM Engine Block

This is the same colour I use on all my so I had lots.

I hand painted the kit then sanded and Futured the out of it. I painted the seat flat and then gave it a very coating of Future to give it a vinyl look. I did the wheels in and the engine in Steel, Aluminum and Jet MM Acrylics.

More Future the decals, and at the end, everything got a of wax.

The Gemma seems to be a scooter, and  has chrome For the trim on the body sides and the “hood ornament” on the fender, I Bare Metal Foil.

The trim on the seat and the ornament on the fender are chromed. Pretty for a little scooter!

The Gemma is awesome, because a.) it is b.) it is a scooter c.) who else builds and d.) It is a FREE scooter. Did I mention it was AND weird. I might have…

not as easy a kit to make as you’d and solid amounts of skill are to get the sanding and painting to work on it. The rear wheel workaround is to making life easier in the run, but only modellers of at moderate experience are likely to it.

On the other hand, it is a fun little kit to but I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone.

You can make out the dashboard decal, as as the labelling on the front spine. The signals are done with Orange over BMF.
