Suzuki GR 650

upgraded to a 2007 Triumph cruiser for a year —

to a 2008 Triumph Scrambler, I rode for a few years (and — but sold).

BUT I’ve a Tempter out in Kentucky I bought on

1983 GR650 X Model motorcycle.

The Suzuki GR650, Tempter in the states, is a nicely 650cc Vertical Twin, at the time was Suzuki’s answer to the vertical twin cycles by Triumph, Norton, BSA, The big difference was the GR650 had been updated with better and reliability, including a unique single shock suspension.

It was produced from 1983 1989, it was only imported the US for two years -1983 and 1984 due to poor sales, mainly the market for this type of had dried up, along with the recession that plagued the at the time, (and maybe a name like Tempter). makes it a rare bike you don’t see much on the roads I have yet to see another Tempter in

These bikes continued to be to Canada and other countries the end of the production run in 1989. It is very in Europe, especially in the Netherlands. seem to run for many miles if

My X model has spoke wheels and forks, while the regular included upgraded air forks, an running front light, two paint and mag wheels.

Below is an ad for my model bike.

My bike had over 7500 miles on the but needed some work to get it worthy. Yes that is a fuel in the tachomter, and it shows what your in as well as a neutral The bike needed a battery and oil right away, but then a big suprise.

The gas tank had been creamed for some time prior, and now had big of the stuff coming off and floating in the I removed it all (what a mess!), and the tank for rust. The fuel vent needed to be re-assembled, as it was from its vent line. I all the gas lines and in-line fuel while I had the tank off the bike

I checked out the air filter and suprise it was misssing! An order to BikeBandit and a brand new air filter was installed.

I changed the engine oil and filter, I the oil drain pan threads and the plug so I had to get a whole setup — new oil pan and from. you guessed it, BikeBandit.com. parts for these bikes is a pain, but some parts are with the GS models. Otherwise is a great resource for parts.

I found an original shop for the bike on eBay which has very useful. A set of highway have been added to the bar on my bike — the only accessory it came with. also had to replace the speedo (another bikebandit.com item for and had the front tire re-balanced at the local cycle shop).

winter I may remove the tank and covers, smooth out the dings bondo, sand, prime, and everything a real deep Apple Red. Right now a factory metal flake color with press on

One of the most popular modifications to bikes is the changing of the rear so the bike revs lower at speeds. Someone had done to my bike, but never put the chain back on. I found a guy parting out a on eBay and bought a used from him.

PartsBandit had the right screws for part as well.

Then is was a major cleaning and polish inspection and tags and my bike was to ride. It’s a sweet with a nice range of in the lower RPMs with variable crankshaft and some when you rev it high. It’s and nimble on the twisty country but heavy enough on the highway it feels solid.

I’ve had it out on mile day trips and it’s great.

Here’s my latest — a sissybar backrest and rack.

Since they don’t anything aftermarket for this I bought this used backrest luggage rack off a 1975 Yamaha 650 motorcycle on

The key was to adapt the backrest and rack it bolt into and through the grab rail securely. was done with the use of a hacksaw, gentle bending, and the drilling of 8 holes. All the screws and bolts are stainless steel.

I think solid and clean looking Best of all the backrest is adjustable by washers between the rest’s and grab rail bottom bolts.

This gives the just enough forward so my wife was not leaning too far back, but and comfortable for cruising.

The best so far was from the guy who sold me the rack/backrest,

who Wow — It looks like it was for that bike!

Having a rear luggage is real handy — and since aquired a red bungie net to items to the rack — a The lockable compartment is a nice to hold valuables as well.
