Suzuki DR 250 S

Pros: New Technology, Light, Fast and Fun.

Cons: Seat and pegs are horrible for the passenger

The Suzuki DRZ-400s is arguably one of the best Dual Sport(DS) motorcycles ever to come to your local shop. I have owned 5 different DS bikes since I was 18 and this is definitely my favorite.

Back in March of this year I was all ready to buy the 2000 Honda XR650L.

Now this is a beautiful motorcycle too. Honestly there are times when I wish I bought the Honda instead but those doubts quickly vanish as soon as the blacktop turns to dirt. Or when my wife says she doesn’t want to come along.

What made me purchase the DRZ was its clearly more off-road design.

This type of bike by nature has to be a compromise between off-road worthiness and its street legal limitations. But the DRZ is so much like a dirt bike with blinkers and a horn that in this category there is no other choice. (I must stop at this point and say that the KTM is probably the best DS bike but because of the price this was never a contender for me.) If you have over $7000 to spend on a DS bike then my recommendation is to stop reading this opinion right now and head over to your local shop and order one today.

At $5349 this was already a little more than I wanted to spend on a 400cc motorcycle but I am very glad I did. The engine is a very powerful and smooth 4 valve DOHC watercooled wonder. Most of the other bikes are air cooled and quite frankly their technology is just a little dated. My 93 KLR250 was already kind of old technology when I bought it in 94 and now for the 2000 model year it is almost identical to my old one.

This is not to say that its not a nice bike because I loved it. Its just that I was looking for something a little more exciting.

As far as the specs go I am going to provide you with a couple of excellent links to sites that will tell you everything you need to know. In addition to those links I will also send you to a discussion group that you can join to share and read comments from other riders.

The first impression I got when I was riding it home that day was. Wow, I am high up there. At 5′ 6 I am certainly not a tall guy but the bike feels great to me.

You will hear some riders complain about the height but I love it. Sure on level ground I can’t touch both my feet but when are you ever really on level ground and how often do you take both feet off the pegs.

The bike is very, very fast and the speedometer is very useful. I use the dual trip meters to measure both gas mileage and oil change intervals. The bike feels very light and is exceptionally nimble in tight techical woods riding.

I live in rocky old new england and this bike feels like it was born here.

I have always felt that DS motorcycles are the most practical machines out there and this is no exception. If your riding is going to consist at all of some off-road excursion then I highly reccommend this bike. Though if a passenger is going to be with you often then I would reccommend the XR650L.

The DRZ is not very comfortable for a passenger. My wife will tell you its absolutely horrible. She does not like riding on this one at all. This is when I wish I bought the XR.

Other than that prepare to be impressed.

Just for the record my other bikes were an 81 Honda XL250, an 83 Honda XL250, an 87 Yamaha XT350 and a 93 Kawasaki KLR250.

Here are the links I promised you. Take care and good luck.
