The Suzuki DR-Z400S is a dual-purpose motorcycle known for being reliable and affordably priced. However beyond its dependability and low price tag, the DR-Z400S is also know for providing a decent level of performance, which has made it one of the most popular dual-sport models in the world. The 2012 Suzuki DR-Z400S is a great bike for any rider who enjoys the freedom to carve corners on the road and heed the call of the wild when they wish to.

In keeping with the DR-Z400 tradition, the 2012 model is capable of delivering pulse-racing excitement when you are winding your way through trails, while also managing neat on-road performance and handling.

The 2012 Suzuki DR-Z400S features a lightweight, compact design that helps facilitate its crisp handling. It’s also equipped with an advanced suspension in the front and rear that absorbs bumps and terrain irregularities with relative ease. The DR-Z400S has a powerful 398cc, liquid-cooled, four-stroke engine that produces strong low rpm torque and crisp throttle response. This makes it possible to enjoy coming out of the corners fast and to fly down trails.

The 2012 DR-Z400S delivers such a capable off-road performance; you practically have to remind yourself that the thing is street legal. Of course the fact that it’s equipped with all the modern conveniences you’d expect in a street bike makes it somewhat easier to remember. Among the street bike features you’ll find on the DR-Z400S are an electric starter and an instrument cluster that’s well equipped with modern features.

The bike also has sports magnesium-alloy clutch, magneto and cam covers that combine to help keep its weight down to a minimum. Meanwhile the digitally mapped DC-CDI system monitors throttle position and engine rpms, adjusting ignition timing in order to maintain efficient combustion. The compact five-speed transmission makes use of a cable-operated clutch with separate outer cover to simplify clutch maintenance.

The 2012 Suzuki DR-Z400S is build on a narrow frame that relies on a combination of thin chrome-moly steel tubes that provide torsional rigidity that’s excellent and further help reduce the bike’s overall weight. The backbone tube, front down tube and steering head gussets help form the dry-sump engine oil tank. A bolt-on aluminum subframe further reduces weight.

Stopping power is good; thanks to 250mm front disc brakes that are equipped with dual-piston caliper. The 220mm rear disc brakes are outfitted with a single-piston caliper. The modern instrument cluster is digital, compact, and features a speedometer, odometer, twin trip meters, clock, timer, and stopwatch.

The bike’s lighting meets legal requirements for on-road riding and features a 60/55-watt H4 halogen headlight, a compact taillight, and rubber-mounted turn signals. A tool kit and the owner’s manual are contained in a pouch located on the rear fender. While riding on the street, the DR-Z’s powerful compact engine propels you around town with confidence and agility.

On the downside, the bike’s already firm suspension can feel even firmer when you’re riding on the road and the seat can also be a little stiff. So it may not be the most comfortable on-road riding experience you’ve ever had.

There is also a smaller, DR-Z125 that’s powered by a 124cc, four-stroke single-cylinder air-cooled engine. The 2012 DR-Z125 boasts similar aggressive styling, which was inspired by the championship winning Suzuki RM-Z motocross bike. The DR-Z 125 is a true off-road bike that’s responsive and features a strong, easy-to-control powerband. The 2012 Suzuki DR-Z125 is equipped with a Mikuni VM20SS carburetor that helps facilitate a smooth throttle response.

It’s built on a lightweight, durable steel frame and available in Champion Yellow. It features the same five-speed constant mesh transmission that the larger 2012 Suzuki DR-Z400S does.
