2013 Suzuki Boulevard C90T

The C90T is a cruiser motorcycle which Suzuki reintroduced to the U.S. market in late December 2012. Its reintroduction deftly sidestepped the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing of Suzuki’s U.S. auto unit. This move purportedly opened more resources for the bike division which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the U.S. motorcycle market this year.

Counting in the C90T, Suzuki now flaunts a total of 47 models in various market segments which include not only cruisers but also sports bikes, standard motor bikes, touring motorcycles, off road and motocross bikes, and scooters. Some three years ago, there were only about ten models to choose from in the Suzuki motorcycle stable.

The C90T is primarily meant to fill in the untapped slot between the 800 cc and 1800 cc offerings in the Boulevard line. It is actually an update of the air-cooled Boulevard C90 which was pulled out of the market in 2009 because of issues on compliance with tightening emission standards. To solve this problem, the water-cooled power plant of the Boulevard M90 was adopted along with the M90 swingarm, main frame, five-speed transmissions and such other components as cooling, intake and exhaust system.

Besides its water-cooled, 90-cubic-inch (1462 cc), V-Twin and 54-degree features, the C90T four-valve engine adopted from the M90 is designed with dual sparkplug heads. The Boulevard C90T’s 1462 cc displacement is the average for motorcycles in the cruiser class. The C90T drive train’s configuration is rounded out by a shaft final drive and a unique low-effort “clutch-assist” design.

Altogether, this setup reputedly delivers a 9.5:1 compression ratio resulting in 77.8 hp at 4800 rpm and a torque of 96.6 lbft at just 2600 rpm. In effect, the Boulevard C90T now has the most powerful engine in its class, Suzuki officials said.

This cruiser is available either in two-tone paint design or as a B.O.S.S. (Blacked Out Special Suzuki) option. The makeover in the styling of the C90T isn’t too radical and doesn’t depart much from its predecessor. It kept its classic cruiser profile although this was cleaned up and smoothed out in order to provide the motorcycle with what Suzuki calls is a “refreshed” look.

Passenger leg room was also improved with the curved leading edges.

The C90T retained its traditional steel tube chassis which supports a 4.8-gallon tank with a capacity of 26 liters for the right and 24.5 liters for the left bag. It is also the first Boulevard model to have saddlebags with integrated, factory-designed hard cases. The C90T is priced just a shade under $14,000, which is about $3,000 more than the price of average cruiser motorbikes.
