Far from being the crude European nation that our angel (that’s how Thornton himself these days) Croatia is a delight. Ditto new urban-adventurist.

If there was any doubt Suzuki’s restyled V-Strom 650 is primarily as a roadster, the name of our should have cleared up the But I didn’t know who Simon was, exactly, so I asked a question that seemed relevant to a V-Strom: Didn’t you do the

It was 8:30 in the morning on Canada and we were in Croatia, at a resort on the of the Adriatic Sea, for a launch of the V-Strom 650. It looked a hot day coming.

Simon Crafar is six feet tall, trim and and handsome, and he smiles easily. He World Superbike and 500 GP in the 1990s, got some podiums, and in 1998 he Mick Doohan to the finish and won the British GP.

So we were to be led through the Croatian by a former road racer, not a rally rider. Pavement, it would be the V-Strom’s home same as it ever was.

The new is significantly restyled, but subtly in action. It’s a little much prettier, and noticeably and slightly more powerful. its motor’s bore-and-… remain the changes to the cam profiles, pistons and valves, and other engine are claimed to have boosted to 68 at 8,800 rpm, up two from the model.

Later in the day, I behind Crafar and some journalists, and watched them race on a Croatian highway. was on the current model, and the French beside him was on a new V-Strom. They to about 100 km/h, got side by and Crafar signalled throttles-on his fist.

The French guy plowed steadily in race after race. rode saddlebag equipped for one race, I pulled up next to on a new V-Strom with no luggage. My with the cleaner bike was as better than the French as his was than Crafar’s.)

The new V-Strom 650 was as a more comfortable, more motorcycle than the model it from. We were told it is shorter, lighter, and more that its ground clearance is 10 mm that fuel economy and output performance are improved, and its seat is more comfortable. Low to torque is improved, (peak remains the same though, 44 at 6,400 rpm) and the engine is at all rpm levels.

That’s what we were

In riding the new bike at speeds up to an 205 km/h, I found no sign we had been misled. The 650 feels in acceleration to a larger bike and not be embarrassed in a straight line against a Triumph Tiger 800 or BMW for that matter. It handles a nimble and poised feel, and was at speed on public highways.

as you might expect, led us down gorgeous, twisted highways at speeds, and even with the tire sliding on weirdly tarmac, the V-Strom felt smooth, and stable. Some of the seemed to feel that were mandatory after stop, and one in particular was able to the front wheel to a nearly position and hold it there for a meters.

Suspension on the new V-Strom felt to the older model, which I briefly. It’s cushy and up road bumps comfortably, but a stable ride at high on good pavement. The new V-Strom can be with adventure-type or more rounded urban-rider style and tail trunk, and with the in place, there was some instability at speed, as if aerodynamic were moving the rear of the around.

That never a real concern, though, at speeds of 180 km/h and more. the luggage, the bike felt stable at an indicated 200 km/h.

held this launch in I was told, because a Japanese rider had said great about the place. At times it that they held it in because the police there appear to be absorbed in something than bothering speeding but it’s more likely Croatia was chosen for this because of what we noticed beautiful, narrow, curving roads, gorgeous torquoise studded with islands, and friendly people who speak

And when we weren’t riding, history embedded in the buildings of a palace that contained and shops and restaurants where you buy a Rolex and then go next for a fish pizza. Rather the backward, superstition-laden east country I expected, Croatia was companionable, and beautiful.

It was, in about as close to my preconceived of rugged poverty as the new V-Strom was to my idea of a Dakar wannabe or our guide was to the sand-in-his-teeth rallyist I he was. I have been before (ask anyone), but seldom been so pleased the method of my correction.

The roads in Croatia were for a bike like the V-Strom and the V-Strom seemed decidedly for them.

Available in black, and orange, the 2012 V-Strom 650 ABS hit Canadian showrooms in October, Suzuki. Pricing is TBA.
