Gautier Paulin impressive under floodlit Qatar MX GP

The opening round of the FIM Motocross World championship saw history in the making under the floodlit Losail circuit in Qatar – the first ever MX GP race to be held at night with a new race format of 1 moto and 1 Super-final. Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gautier Paulin  was excited about the new venue and challenge and right from the drop of the gate, GP21 showed that he meant business.

The first MX1 moto immediately set a group of  fast riders out front with Paulin and current World champion, Antonio Cairoli trailing the group from bad starts. Paulin set some fast lap times and looked the quickest man on the circuit when succeeded in pulling away from Cairoli but was caught off guard and catapulted over the bars in a hard crash. Paulin seemed a bit dazed but quickly remounted and within a lap was back on pace.

He closed the gap to Cairoli in an amazing string of consistent laps and also managed to pass Russian, Evgeny Bobryshev on the last lap to salvage 4 th place.

Escaping with only some minor bruising, Paulin rolled onto the line for the new Super-final format which combines the 20 best MX1 and 20 best MX2 racers from their respective moto 1 results.  Paulin had a good jump but was pushed wide in the first turn. He quickly settled and set about moving through the field, once again setting a very fast pace. He first disposed of Belgian Kevin Strijbos and then Bobryshev as he put in a last minute charge to catch Clement Desalle.

Paulin ran into some back-markers on the final chase and gave it one more shot at Desalle but could not make it past the Belgian. He crossed the line in 3 rd   which secured an overall 3 rd for the GP and championship.

“The track was very fast today, much easier than during the qualification. I had fun except during the first race when I crashed pretty hard on my head. It took me two laps to recover, and then I had a better feeling and passed Bobryshev on the last lap.

In the Superfinal I lost too much time passing slower riders in the early laps, but I passed Bobryshev for third in the last five minutes and even got close to Desalle in second. I’m happy with this third position; it’s a great reward for the team staff who worked hard this winter.” Gautier Paulin

With only a few days left to recover, Paulin heads straight to Thailand for round 2 of the 18 round series where another new track and venue which will put the MX1 championship contenders to the test in sweltering humid conditions.
