Lexus CT 200h review

by Tom (6 March 2014)

Introduced in the CT 200h was Lexus’s first into the so-called premium hatchback segment . It was a shrewd as the model now attracts 85% of first-time to the brand, and, with sold in the UK, it’s the most Lexus both here and in Europe.

Three years on and time for a mid-life revamp, and the or improvements to the 2014 CT 200h the areas of body styling and aerodynamics, suspension, power noise, vibration and harshness, consumption, emissions, interior equipment and, not least,

The CT 200h is available in six different levels, and they’re priced £20,995 for the entry-level S to £29,495 for the Premier grade. Note these prices are £1000 to lower than current CT with only the middle-ranking price unreduced at £23,995.

What hasn’t changed is the hybrid drive system, as in the Toyota Prius and Auris although the CT’s E-CVT transmission (still with EV, Eco and Sport driving modes) has remapped to give a more build-up of revs that’s matched to the car’s speed. In words, the four-cylinder petrol now revs less frenetically acceleration with no loss of – the 0-62 in 10.3secs and 112mph top figures are as before.

The 2014 fuel consumption and CO2 figures on wheel size: 68.9mpg and on 17 wheels, 74.3mpg and 88g/km on The eco-tyred, 15-equipped S returns with just 82g/km – of 2.2mpg and 6g/km over the model.

With apologies to this doesn’t concern, the S qualify as an Ultra Low Emission in London (75g/km or less), so the congestion charge will be On the plus side, all CT 200hs are within the sub 100g/km £0 VED Band A.

While on this press the trip computers of the two CTs I drove 43.5mpg (on 17 wheels), and 46.4mpg You shouldn’t read too much that as the two were driven on roads in different traffic but it’s unlikely that a CT on any of the three wheel sizes ever get close to its official figure.

Visually, the front is the CT’s most obvious Lexus describes it as spindle It took me a while for that to drop, but the 2014 car definitely sharper with it, and it more resembles the latest IS, GS, RX and LS models.

The also features new lights and new wheel designs, while a fin roof antenna has replaced the aerial and there’s a sharper-looking bumper to harmonize with the front end.

Inside there’s a host of but worthwhile improvements. These new textiles and plastics (from the seat you can touch at least a different finishes, excluding the twin USB ports, a new interior control system, a new controller on the centre console and, in with the Premium satnav a useful 4.2-inch TFT (Thin Transistor) multi-info display the main instrument display.

The CT has the multifunction steering wheel as in the latest IS range, and I have to say it good and feels just The six- or ten-speaker Lexus systems now have speaker made from a bamboo which apparently makes both lighter and better (There’s no mention of panda also being employed in the 13-speaker Mark Levinson

Without the opportunity to compare old new back-to-back it’s hard to be about the many measures to improve the front wheel-driven driving dynamics and NVH. rigidity has been tightened, in turn has allowed a softening of the and rear anti-roll bar settings, with further optimisation of the power steering.

The first CT was criticised by some in the for its harsh ride. I described it as and went on to comment that might almost have the mark on chassis rigidity. the optimum ride/handling balance is a business, and some of the appallingly roads on this launch’s routes in and around Rome certainly have highlighted any deficiencies, but they didn’t.

said, the F-Sport version on 17 wheels and has the CT’s Lateral Damper System fitted as (now mounted more than before) and I wouldn’t its ride to be any firmer, especially the CT’s modest power and All praise, though, for the steering, is beautifully weighted and responsive, and the available which certainly the CT’s supportive front

On 16 wheels the ride is a little supple, and although the steering is ever so slightly less it’s certainly not an issue.

my confident assertion three ago that noise, vibration and is exceptionally well-suppressed in the CT 200h, has nonetheless incorporated 94 new measures to things further. Suffice to NVH levels remain impressively

The £26,745 F-Sport is a sheep in clothing. It has at least as much impact as hot five-door hatches the Audi S3 Sportback and the BMW M135i, but nothing like their Maybe that’s the F-Sport’s

Overall the 2014 CT 200h is affordable, better-looking, a little more refined, and a teeny bit at least on paper. With to the CVT auto and ride, it’s slightly better to drive. to Lexus’s own warranty data, also the most reliable and you can’t get much more than that.

Footnote: It’s fun to consider the IS-F’s 417bhp V8 shoehorned the CT 200h F-Sport’s engine With rear- or all-wheel (the transmission tunnel’s there) that would even the 360bhp Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG the way although at a likely £50k or I wouldn’t bet on it being built.
