2006 Suzuki V-Strom DL Dubious Styling, Valiant

time we saw a visage such as it was likely being chased by brandishing pitchforks and torches.  the V-Strom 1000 is an ugly creation of components, but it’s surprisingly agile, and underneath its styling is a valiant spirit of carrying you to the some of the more places the world has to offer.

For while Suzuki is proclaiming the DL-1000 as a road bike, with a bit of imagination knows Its rugged, nay craggy and slab-sided, delivers a different message; is an adventure bike, small “a” good for those with a sort exploration in mind.  The big DL do hard-packed gravel and dirt but if tighter, rougher territory is thing you’re better off at KTM’s 950 Adventure or the V-Strom

While the big DL 1000 will do the the bike’s weighty nature itself felt in the dirt and we its smaller sibling is far more once off the tarmac.  Simply don’t let the Bridgestone Trail fool you into dirt aspirations.

Out on the road it’s a story, open up the V-Strom and the 650 is left gasping and wheezing in the The 90-degree 996cc v-twin out instant useable torque, arrive at 5,000rpm to thrust you or better yet punch a brutal through the air with the Strom’s utilitarian face and make the end get all light.  You’ve not felt until something this wheelies towards you.

output is in the neighborhood of 85hp @ rpm, and while in this day and age not a number that attracts a lot of the V-Strom 1000 never short in the passes or hooning on the road.  Like all twins is a broad sweet spot in the rev and between 4 and 8 thousand the V-Strom thumping and strong.

If this monster has a character though, and most do, it’s the delivery.  It is not what you would smooth, not even close.  The injection mapping with its lean surging has attempted, in dark way, to … the of this twin engine.

  it hasn’t entirely succeeded.

the glitchy fueling is worth your dealer re-map the for, indeed one Suzuki we spoke with said had even considered a manufacturer over the issue.  While in you may want to truly open up the An occasional OWD collaborator has done a with some Remus GP pipes, and the sound and power is, to say the least, thunderous.

Suddenly ogre has a voice to shake the and the brawn to back it up.

On-road can be summed up in three very words, “Fossie! Fossie! For a bike that appears tall and awkward at a standstill, the 1000 is agile and flickable.

It is motorcycling’s equivalent of the monster the 1974 “classic” Young dancing, except elegant and That makes the V-Strom a of Peter Boyle’s looks with Fred Astaire’s

The magic here is a case of the outweighing the sum of the parts, as the components anything special but pull to do a solid job.  Up front the forks are non-adjustable, but the touring set is for with the rear monoshock, features remote spring adjustment and less conveniently adjustable rebound damping.

The however, is suited to more ventures; in the sweepers you find a high speed weave to creep in when pushing It’s nothing traumatic or dramatic, and slipping only in at around 160kph of silliness, again this may be a symptom of the choice.

The reality of riding though, is when it comes to laying the miles, the V-Strom is as comfortable as a set of old a pipe and a worn copy of classic. The riding position is, and I say this of any bike being just what the chiropractor It is comfy, neutral and well

The wide bars are within reach and provide exceptional Ample legroom is supplied by low pegs and the seat is broad and Take that BMW, your ergo-centric design-zeitgeist, at over half the cost of an the choice between big comfy is easily made.

Other touches that add to the V-Strom’s abound.  Shielded behind hand guards are adjustable brake and clutch levers.  there’s a solid rear and grab rail for the pillion off the back, a suitable mount for an ample duffle-bag of gear, and other adventure “supplies”.

Even the dials are easy to and well lit, though from a dated parts bin There is one tragic flaw in the and that is the windscreen.

We found with the DL-650 and the experience was on the 1000, this windscreen is to and still air what a teenage is to a beauty contest.  It does in any sense, approach being a In fact you’re likely off without it, as our photographer Kevin after what can only be a trip of frustration… a vague of sanity and environmental accommodation him from chucking this into the ocean mid-ferry

If there is a word of advice it is go with an aftermarket selection, perhaps – it is not as if you’ll spoil the 1000’s looks.

We’ve a lot of the DL-1000’s unloved, lumpen and looks, but put that aside for a the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 is a value offering.  For an MSRP of CDN you get a bike that is practical, handles well, has more enough power for the road, and can on the occasional bit of dirt – and if you really about it even the looks are a Let’s face it, a design this can only have one to scare the bears away.

One more reason the Suzuki 1000 should prove a choice amongst the adventure cognoscenti.
