Spending a day on a Suzuki DR 650

June 21,

We were up in the hills above Tuesday doing some Ron Coleman, who runs Western Sport Motorcycle Adventures. was on his BMW and I was riding Ron’s latest a Suzuki DR 650. This was my time on a DR.

While a bit tall for my legs (seat height inches), the light weight pounds dry) made the DR an bike to manage. One time I didn’t get my foot down enough and we started going I just planted my foot and it back upright. Try that on a motorcycle.

Heading out of Boulder on the gravel up Sunshine Canyon I was getting with the bike and getting to the one-cylinder engine and the way it responds. you don’t ride dual-sports or bikes on a regular basis it takes a while to get comfortable the way you can go so very slow and the engine will not …. As with any the suspension ate up the roughness on the road and got a grip on the gravel in a way my Kawasaki never will.

At a point above Gold we turned off onto the Switzerland an old narrow-guage rail line the tracks long since Here things got rough and I got to see this baby would do. between first and second frequently standing on the pegs, we our way along through the rocks, a couple streams, and just got out and did what dual-sports are designed to do: mountain goat.

Later in the day we also headed up Rollins Pass, a very road I was last on more 30 years ago in a jeep. By this I was feeling a lot more confident and cruised right on up.

So the thing the bike was this. It just did it. not an extremely experienced off-roader but the DR it pretty easy for me. Last I rode the GS that Ron was on now and didn’t for it. It was too big, too heavy, and too twitchy.

And I dropped it twice. Other I’ve ridden 650 V-Stroms and liked them, but with 150 pounds less weight, I this DR more.

There’s not a lot of in reviewing other points of and performance. I’m not expert to speak knowledgeably about a lot of The bottom line for me is simply this was a dependable bike handled well and I felt on it. That plus the fact it’s lighter and costs than a V-Strom means when I finally do get a dual-sport it is more likely to be one like

That’s a pretty good
