Suzuki AN 650

The first bike we ever . about 100 years ago, was the V-Strom. It’s a great with a wonderful engine, good handling and looks its mother could love. And now we are testing the runt of the litter, the 650. And what’s changed?

At glance very little. still enormous, still as as ever and still as ugly as a brawl. In fact, the only difference between siblings is the exhaust on the smaller bike and a less leery colour

Taking the 650 V-Strom home, was likely to be something of an anticlimax. as over the last few weeks I had been riding the GSX-R tested elsewhere. One extreme to the you might say.

And you’d be … right, of And completely wrong. Because, its bulk and relatively small the 650 V-Strom is not a slow bike. Not by any

That little motor, commonly seen in everyone’s first big bike the SV650, may produce 66ps but it does it in I am pushed to remember the last I rode a vee twin that this happily and I certainly think of one this small went this well.

look at the downsides, because must be some. And there The SV650 is not, by any stretch of the a pretty bike. Understatement. as ugly as sin.

Happily, though, it is also as much fun. The only criticism I have is also and purely down to my own taste and If the term ‘plastic maggot’ nothing to you then please free to skip this

Back in the late 70’s and 80’s there was a universally mocked and generally disliked called the CX500. It was also common because at the time it was the shaft drive liquid bike available that was a size and had decent performance so across the land bought and ran them ‘til they

The styling and handling earned the nickname of the plastic maggot, and one of the enduring memories I have of was the noise they made. it was, and the 650 V-Strom sounds like a plastic maggot. pipe has to go…

Riding the beast, of course, is a story. The noise gets behind and all you have is the experience. The is inevitably a little woolly. all, there’s a lot of fork you and the wheel and dual purpose don’t help. But you can still get knee down if that of behaviour appeals, and the bike easily and accurately.

The wide help to lever it into fast and the geometry works to allow you to flick the hefty around quite easily. The are ample for a bike of this hampered as they are by the yards of movement. No fuss or dramas even on gritty roads.

The V-Strom lives on back The twistier the road and dodgier the the better, at least within I spent much of the test on country lanes I normally simply because the bike was a laugh to ride there.

Ace from the high seat and a engine make for a great roads tool, and this is one of the

Comfort is a strong point as The big seat is an ideal combination of padding and firm control the small screen is adjustable to pretty well anyone buffet free riding. The handguards and heated grips turn the little V_Strom a fantastic all weather bike,

Functionally everything does as expect. Mirrors and lights are excellent, there s plenty of to strap stuff on and there is a of luggage available specially for it. consumption is miserly, though the gauge is still a little too for my liking.

Overall this is a little motorbike. Well, not so actually. It would be ideal as a bigger bike for a large as a commuter or even as a tourer for who doesn’t mind having to a little harder.

The willing engine, smooth and enjoyable handling make it one of the fun bikes I’ve ridden year.

And isn’t that biking is all about?
