Suzuki GSX-R 1000

It may be a bizarre title, but bear me and it may make some sense.

year, you may remember, we waxed all about the GSX-R 1000 K4. It was a — savagely fast, powerful and as easy to ride as an to ride thing. Well, year’s K5 model takes the up a level.

Or two.

On the basis far too much is clearly not enough, engineers have extracted power and torque out of the 1000cc And made it more accessible to And because the old bike was, at a bit of a porker, they shed weight.

And made the brakes better. And made it more In fact, they’ve made a new bike.

Opinions are divided on the especially of the exhaust. All I can say is that it much, much better in the than it ever will in and it sounds much nicer a production exhaust system has any to sound.

This is, sadly, a fairly test. Premier Suzuki in Wickham (0208 777 8040) us their demonstrator for a couple of while we were waiting for a test. Then things got in the The ground, mainly, as you’ll be able to read elsewhere on the Anyway, during the test we to commute, have a bit of a hoon and up to Birmingham in the sunshine.

And back in the rain. At night. Lovely.

thing you’ll notice this bike is just how it is. Everything fits really You don’t need to be a contortionist to get on, the is nice, the pegs are high but not so and the clocks are really, really to look at.

The only minor fly in the is the mirrors which, while for the class, simply don’t you enough about what’s up behind you.

The next you’ll notice is the noise. Oh. My. Someone at Suzuki clearly on the Evocative motorbike noises And passed. With merit. the GSX-R 1000 sounds even with the stock

Loud enough to be interesting, enough to be inoffensive and agressive to make people get out of the way. And yet legal.

I’m grinning an … as I pull away and my first journey. Yes, a commute through the middle of And guess what?

For a bleeding sports missile the GSX-R is good. OK, so I’m used to on a GSX-R 750 anyway but the 1000 just be too wide, too heavy, too powerful, right? Um, no. A slightly application of throttle sees a slide going round Arch but that’s my fault No, the only real drama when some vigorous sees the front come up hard as I change gear.

As changing from fifth to at this point it’s a um, exciting and warrants a major of circumspection for the next few miles. through traffic is easy, the are light and the bike is massively throughout the performance envelope.

An opportunity for a bit of free riding the handling to be a revelation — at the equal of it’s smaller siblings and far better than any four cylinder bike ridden. The brakes are astonishing, the big bike down from speeds and making the front howl with just a of fingers’ pressure. And as for the performance.

I don’t think I need to say too about it. Quite simply, bike is a missile. I was actually speechless by the sheer ease which it gathered speed. In any at all.

It’s just fast and yet remains strikingly to ride.

That’s a bit of a double sword, I’d say. although the new GSX-R 1000 is by no intimidating it has the capacity to get even a experienced rider into a load of trouble very indeed. Corners and other come up quicker than you they ever would, and the bike has probably got the handling to get fine, the rider may not.

A longer ride showed a comfortable side to the bike, the practical bungee hooks of the old have disappeared, making luggage a bit of a challenge. But that’s what you buy a bike like for, I guess. And coming in the driving rain showed actually, ridden with a bit of it’s pretty docile.

The is OK as well, though I do wish at Suzuki’s horn department go on the same course as the exhaust and guys because the thing fit sounds like it belongs on a moped.

I mentioned the mirrors Forget it — on the open you needn’t worry what’s you because it isn’t about to you up and, in fact, if you can see it you probably passed it. Though it might be to see the blue lights behind you they set-up a roadblock, of

So the long and short of it is this. If an experienced rider and have a of common sense then is, in my opinion, no better motorcycle on the today. The GSX-R 1000 K5 do everything you could reasonably ask of it though fitting knobblies and it green laning might be pushing it a little — and do it far than you can to boot.

It’s stupidly fast and incredibly to ride at 9/10ths all day. at 7/10ths you’re still quickly enough to pass well anything and to get nicked if not on the ball. Open the throttle and Milennium Falcon fast, mercifully devoid of Wookies.

But if someone who needs the biggest and bike but perhaps, in the cold of day, lacks the experience to the most of it, I’d respectfully you look elsewhere. Because it may be mannered Doctor Jekyll at but take any liberties and it will and viciously snap into aggressive and frankly terrifying Dr Who might just pull arms off and beat you to … the soggy ends.

Thanks again to Premier of West Wickham, Kent for the of their test bike.
