Steve McQueen’s Indian Scout — Ultimate MotorCycling

Steve McQueen’s Indian Scout 1942 Indian Sport Scout It is an early summer morning and I’m an hour north of Los Angeles, sliding down the Conejo Grade towards Camarillo. The usually sunny coastal town is buried under a gloomy sheet metal sky-a downpour looks imminent. In the movies, this would read as grim foreshadowing. I am on my way to meet motorcycle collector Daniel Schoenewald and ride his 1942 Indian Sport Scout, once owned by Steve McQueen. I can almost see the legendary actor’s auroral blue eyes glowering down from the leaden sky in furrowed concern. Don’t run my Indian into the back of a Subaru, or I’ll be waiting for you pal, he warns before taking a sip of Old Milwaukee ...

1952 Indian Scout 22- Three-Speed DIAL YOUR RIDE!

1952 Indian Scout 22″ Three-Speed 1952 Indian Scout Sturmey-Archer 3 Speed 22″ Frame 26″ Wheels I imported this Indian Scout from America a few years ago and have been riding it. Indian machines enjoy an almost mythological status among motorcycle enthusiasts, so I’d always wanted one. But rather than pay a five figure sum for a motorized vintage Indian, I decided this unmotorized Indian Scout was an extremely practical option …not only much cheaper to buy and import, but also good exercise! After WW2, bicycles made in America were heavyweight ‘balloon-tired’ machines that were not practical for long-distance commutes or touring. They were essentially recreational machines. ...

1920 INDIAN SCOUT MODEL

1920 INDIAN SCOUT MODEL

This is a collectable 1/6th scale model of a 1920 Indian Scout, there are not many 1/6th scale model motorcycles around, so they are quite rare. It is made by Guiloy and retails for about $80.00. The scale of 1/6th means that this is a very large model at 15 inches long and 7 inches high, it weighing just under 2lb. The model is not too bad and there is plenty of detail and as a static display piece that’s all you want. None of the brake or gear levers and pedals move, the chain doesn’t revolve and the front suspension (what little the bike had anyway) doesn’t operate. Only the seat is sprung that gives the bike some suspension. I found that the cables can come adrift very ...

1920 Indian Scout There aren’t many classic motorcycles which star in their own feature films. But then, there aren’t many classic motorcycles which can claim to be The World’s Fastest Indian. Although Anthony Hopkins is the headline star of a new film, The World’s Fastest Indian, all classic bike fans will no doubt be rather more interested in the hardware on display. Hopkins plays Burt Munro, a New Zealander who spent a lifetime perfecting his 1920’s Indian Scout. In the 1960s, Munro took the Scout to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and, following repeated attempts, year after year, he finally set a new speed record and in doing so captured the spirit of ...

1935-1945 Indian Model 741 History — Ultimate MotorCycling

1935-1945 Indian Model 741 | History Indian Heroes In times of war, almost everything becomes a potential weapon, and the motorcycle is no exception. Though the purposes differ, some motorcycle attributes prized by civilian riders, such as compact size, maneuverability, and light weight, have long been attractive to soldiers as well. Of course, in the early days, motorcycles weren’t entirely satisfactory. Though some could deal with the primitive conditions of everyday use, military life was more abusive. Soldiers might ride them into places no regular rider would contemplate. Still, as the machines themselves were refined and improved, far-sighted military planners saw an increasing role ...

1940 INDIAN SPORT SCOUT Heirloom Indian – Grampa’s old motorcycle comes home to stay Photos: Amee Reehal When father and son Terry and Chad Murphy want to remember dad and grampa, they don’t have to look at a worn black and white photo; they can go to the garage and bring to life the Indian motorcycle he took on a summer journey in 1940. The late Charles Gordon Murphy – better known as Spud — was born in 1918 in Neville, Saskatchewan but spent most of his life in Calgary. His first motorcycle was a 1932 New Imperial, a machine he bought for $5 in 1935. By 1940 he was pumping gas and fixing cars at the Big Chief Texaco station on 17 Ave. in Calgary, and he’d earned enough money ...
