There have been underrated motorcycles throughout bikes that perform well, get good reviews, and outside of a few enlightened individuals, to generate a huge following. like the Honda Hawk Suzuki Bandit 400, YZF-600R, and the Triumph Tiger to name a few. Wait, the 1050?

Isn’t that a new to be considered underrated? Well look at the facts; It seems every journalist that has it either loves it, or likes it a Tiger 1050 owners love their bikes (at the ones I’ve read or talked to) and have no interest in rid of them. The Tiger is good (lots of people think has a fun and entertaining amount of power, and can do anything you ask of it.

Unfortunately, the Tiger has not been a runaway sales for Triumph. Why? I think the issue is that not a lot of people to “get” the Tiger 1050.

times I was asked “but type of bike is it? It seems motorcycle riders want to be to classify their ride one category or another. Why are we so interested in our fitting into a specific

Does it give us a sense of in the motorcycling world?Does being to say something like “my bike is a bike therefore I am a sport-touring of person” validate who and what we are as

Before we delve too deeply the murky and convoluted depths of let’s look at what the 1050 can do and what it can’t.

Triumph re-designed the Tiger in 07 decided to drop the pretense it was an “adventure” bike as everyone that a bike of that really isn’t made for off road trail riding doing so does often to “adventures”). Instead Triumph to build the Tiger 1050 as an bike; the kind of bike would take the worst the local D.O.T. could at it and laugh (growl?).

A bike that when the not only got tough but full of and uneven pavement the tough the Tiger 1050) would get To that end Triumph kept the tall and equipped it with a long-travel suspension (5.9″ of both front and rear) to eat up the bumps in the road and sometimes the that go bump in the night that an armadillo?).

Another benefit of a tall bike is the view of the road and traffic you. Looking over is much preferred to looking them. A downside to a tall is that unless you, the are also tall there be an issue of contact between feet and the ground. There are ways to combat this 1) Never stop.

This, as one can is not very practical. 2) Grow or your legs longer; not very practical. 3) Offer a seat option.

Much practical than the first two the one that Triumph used to make its bike more to a wider range of body The Tiger 1050 that I did indeed have the low seat on it I picked it up.

Now I have a 32″ inseam and I was on tippy-toes while riding a Tiger in Gatlinburg a few months ago stock seat height is I was on the balls of my feet on the test with both feet so the low seat lowers the seat by about an 1″ I’d estimate. I did have a few people of varying heights sit on the and the low seat seemed to work well for a wide range of Triumph also makes a seat for those of you who play in the

Not only is the Low seat low but it is also a gel seat to provide high of comfort for long rides. I can to the comfort level as, even the 500 mile day I had bringing the bike to the 2WF lair, I still felt I could ride another miles with no issue. All is not with the seat however as my and I found out one afternoon while some errands. If you leave the outside in the sun for an hour or more the gets extremely hot.

Not is it hot on initial contact but it doesn’t down like a normal filled seat will a few minutes. During a 20 minute around town I actually was to see if the bike had caught on fire as the stayed hot for that long. after being off the bike for 3 the tops of our legs/bottom of our butts still beet red.

has been made aware of and I’m sure is working very to figure out the design flaw in the gel If you take precautions it shouldn’t be too big of a and the comfort level of the seat for rides greatly outweighs the issue.

One thing this does extremely well is The passenger seat itself and the seat-to-peg relationship gets two up from my wife and the rider’s relationship gets two thumbs up me. The bike has more leg room any sport-tourer on the market and a better all riding position for racking up the Wind protection is not as good as a sport-touring bike but on hot days in the south that is actually a trait.

With the stock the wind hit me right on my upper area without any real at the helmet level (the top of the sits 19 1/2″ above the Low Taller screens are available both Triumph and the aftermarket so the perfect height for you should be

For those that want to tour or even commute the bike Triumph has you covered accessory saddlebags and/or top box with a tank bag and tail-bag Since the muffler sits up on the right side of the bike, the branded saddlebag kit comes one saddlebag with 23 liters of space (left) and one saddlebag of liters of internal space

While the bags aren’t they should provide room for the kinds of doo-dads one carries for day trips. Of course you can go if you just gotta have 45+ of space. I can honestly say that the choice to ride the Tiger or any current sport-touring bike on a mile

day I would choose the hands down every

So with the upright seating commanding view, wide that give the bike a and nimble feel, a dry weight of 436 pounds, and rock solid at speed, the Tiger 1050 in the comfort, touring, and commuting but how does it handle itself the ride gets sporty?

that long travel that eats up almost in its path and makes the bike a joy to … the urban jungle Well that same is the only thing keeping bike from being a all around 10.

When Triumph this bike they looking to create a bike could do almost anything as to perfectly as possible. While is a noble goal and one that be appreciated by every motorcyclist on the it is, sadly enough, impossible (at for now). The one area that knew was going to be a week was the suspension when the bike was in the of someone that really it in the corners. The good news?

are only certain types of that really affect the negatively and even better is that a lot of the wallowing and damping can be adjusted out. The suspension  only ties itself knots during fast while staying mostly in almost every other of corner.

Triumph knows that the will need some in the form of aftermarket suspension for those riders that want to push hard and that they are on a sportbike or for that are packing a few extra For the rest of the riders the bike be fine with just suspension adjustments. One thing I did was that any mid-corner bumps taken in stride with the worst kicking the Tiger off line, and then only by a and never enough to give me any factor.

The front brakes on the are quite good, offering feedback and modulation, while stopping the bike with 2 fingers on the lever. The downside again focuses on the suspension; the bike dives under braking is a tad bit of an understatement. Due to the shortish (compared to big sport-touring bikes) the brake is not very effective.

Triumph Tiger 1050

It like most sportbike brakes in that it takes a lot of on the pedal for very little of forward speed. Not horrible something that someone from a long wheelbase touring bike will to adjust to.

I have now ridden size triple that makes and I continue to be impressed by and every one. If you look at the specs ( 114bhp at 9,400 rpm at 6,250 rpm ) you may find yourself If that is how you feel you are doing a grave disservice.

Sure not going to beat a ‘Busa in a race but some bikes are about how the power is delivered than how much power is When you ride a Hayabusa or it is all about the motor; everything is secondary to the warp core below you. When you the Tiger 1050 the motor and the way it the power allows you to appreciate not the bike but the ride itself.

That’s not to say the bike is a slug or or lacks power; indeed managed to disguise a hooligan in the of an upstanding motorcycle citizen. are but a throttle twist away as low as 2k rpms.

The motor provides nice power that I, a person that usually from WD (wheelie dysfunction…..I can get the up I just can’t keep it can execute awesome looking for hundreds of feet merely by the throttle at 2k and riding it on up to the redline. The Tiger had the Triumph accessory canister installed along the re-map which restores the that the stock canister to meet emissions standards.

The exhaust sounds better stock, giving the bike a growl while still quiet enough so as not to draw law enforcement attention when the is being silly (not THAT ever happens). two-up the Tiger 1050 had of oomph when you needed it. On the back to the 2WF offices from secret Georgia headquarters, the was averaging 45mpg on the highway at somewhat more than the limit).

Around town the got between 35-40mpg depending on how the throttle was being twisted. On the the bike was going about (miles not MPH) before the light came on and 160ish town with a refuel in about 4 to 4 1/2 gallons into the 5.2 tank.

The Tiger 1050 has a laid out dash area all the buttons within easy All your normal warning are accounted for and the digital speedometer/analog combo is very easy to in any lighting conditions. The Tiger also come with a computer that will you all kinds of useful information; top average speed, miles to avg. mpg, and the like.

Of since accessing that requires you to take a hand off the and push a little button, it is only easily accessed you are at a stop. A handlebar mounted would be a great addition and one would allow the rider to the info while riding.

Besides the suspension the only I found fault with was the and transmission. Neither were bad or I just had a hard time smooth clean shifts. You the kind that make passenger feel like are riding on an automatic motorcycle.

For reason I couldn’t seem to get the and transmission to work together well; never missed a and the shift action was smooth so it may merely been an adjustment with the clutch itself (or the

This brings us full back to the question of what of bike the Tiger 1050 is. riding one for a month I can answer question easily; it’s a with a touch of sportbike in. What, that doesn’t the question to your satisfaction? OK how about this;

Think to when you first started how that felt? You didn’t if it was a straight road, curvy a road without traffic, or a with traffic you were happy to be out riding. THAT is the of bike the Tiger is…..it is a machine that takes you to the days before you got all complicated and as a motorcycle rider.
